Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug, Stainless Steel

Customer Review: Keeps coffee hot for hours, 1 handed use, no leaks
Summary: 5 Stars

This travel mug has several key features:
1) Thermal - its insulated interior keeps coffee very hot, comparable to some of my more expensive mugs

2) One handed operation - Click away - click to open, click to close - can be done with a finger. I had a mug I loved that had the typical slide opening, after 2 years of hard use it would slide closed every time I tilted it to take a drink, that's not a possibility with this

3) Spill-proof - remember to click it closed and when you slam on your brakes and it goes flying, you won't have anything to worry about except how to retrieve it so you can keep drinking - 1 caveat, after drinking give it a little shake before clicking it closed to push down any residual liquid in the top

4) Leak-proof - couple caveats here - don't overfill (leave at least 1" from the inner black rim) and make sure the cap is tight

5) Durable - I wash it in the dishwasher w/o problems and have dropped it onto tile without problems

6) Easy to clean - I had a problem with dried coffee accruing on the underside of the slide on other mugs, this mug is very easy to clean (clean it in the open position)

7) easy to hold - a slight recess towards top of the mug gives a nice place to comfortably grip the mug

Cons: The metal has stained/discolored slightly after 8 months of daily

Customer Review: Strong Chemical Smell and Taste
Summary: 2 Stars

I really wanted this one - the reviews were great, I loved the design, loved the way it poured, loved the decent amount of time it'd keep my coffee hot.

But the first one I got I had to return because of a strong chemical smell and taste that just wouldn't go away - even got worse with repeated washings.

So I returned it for replacement, thinking it was defective, but had the same problem. I read here that there was a new lid, so I went to Walmart to see if I had the old or new lid. Yes, it was the old one.

So I bought one with a new lid, planning to return the Amazon replacement and just get a refund. The new lid has a twist off part of the inner seal, to make it easier to wash. There's an easily removable gasket on that piece too.
Something's wrong still though, because it happened yet again and this morning it was so bad I just bagged it (that'd be the third one) and took it back to Walmart.

I just don't get it. It's not some strange hypersensitivity that only affects me because I showed it to two friends who took one sniff and smelled the same thing. And it's not because I didn't wash it well in this first place, the smell and taste get worse with repeated washings.

I don't know what the problem is but I just can't recommend this product. I gave it a star for design though - can't fault the design.

Customer Review: Q-tip cleaning tip
Summary: 4 Stars

Great mug. Completely spill proof. Kept coffee hot hot for 3 hrs. and warm for 2.
After a few months of use however, my coffee began to taste really bitter. At first, I thought it was just me. However, the tea that I put in there also came out tasting really nasty. I then noticed a film of grimy black stuff on the seal under the cap when you click the lid open. It's impossible to clean because the space is so thin. Soaking it in hot soapy water does not remove it.
What I did was soaped a Q-tip and basically cleaned the disk that popped out when you clicked it. The first time I did it, the Q tip came out charcoal black. The coffee tasted much better afterwards, but still a little off. I'm sure it's because theres a film of leftover whatever on the inside of the cap that the Q tip can't get to... but o well. What can you do.

Update: I ended up throwing this cup away because the coffee just tasted really bitter from the residue. I ended up buying the Nissan 12-Ounce Stainless-Steel Tea Tumbler with Infuser. It's completely spill proof, easier to clean. I've had it for 2+ years now. Still great! Downside is it's a screw on lid. Not as convenient as the click button, but the coffee grime in the OXO really grossed me out.

Customer Review: Design flaw causes heat loss
Summary: 2 Stars

There is a MAJOR design flaw that allows heat to rapidly escape. You see the 1 inch black grip at the top of the stainless steel section? This area provides NO insulation! Look inside the mug and you will see the insulated stainless steel section end at the black grip.

When you put hot liquids in the mug, the stainless steel section remains cool but the black grip becomes very warm. All that warmth in the grip is heat that your are losing from your drink! Sometimes I wonder if companies even test the products they create because this is a flaw they should have picked up on the first trial run.

Oxo should have designed the mug so that the stainless steel insulation extended all the way to the top with a rubber grip SURROUNDING the stainless steel. This is how my Nissan 14oz leakproof mug is designed which does a far better job retaining heat.

Since heat rises, your hot beverage continues to lose heat from the grip while you drink. If you are a sipper that likes to gradually drink for more than 15-30 minutes or if you are a commuter that wants their coffee to remain hot until you get to work, you will want to find another mug with better insulation.

On the positive side, the click button to open and close the mug is fantastic and allows easy 1 handed operation without any leakage.

Customer Review: Great mug - Poor cleanability (hope this helps)
Summary: 5 Stars

I really love these mugs for their ability to retain the heat. Didn't like the fact that the sip got smaller and smaller within a couple of weeks. After soaking the top overnight I noticed some small globs of old coffee in the bowl. At this point I had to take it apart. After tinkering with it for awhile,I broke the first one. Since I had two of them I took a more deliberate approach.

Actually there are 2 things that you can do to aid in cleaning these cups. The first, is to remove the cap on the clicker thus revealing a screw that allows the sealing plunger to be removed. Don't be too surprised at the sludge that you will see inside the lid. The amount of goop that collects is really amazing. After cleaning as much as I could from here, I noticed a tab near the top of the drink path. This tab stops even the smallest brush from passing through the channel. I was able to remove this with a small screwdriver then smooth the area with an exacto knife. Now the entire drink path can be cleaned. I am using a brush that was made for cleaning baby bottles. Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Cleaning Brush, 4 Pack available here on Amazon for $4.49.

The cup now stays clean just by rinsing. An added plus is after removing the tab, you can now get good amount of coffee to come out, instead of the tiny sip that the tab restriction was allowing.
