Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug, Stainless Steel

Customer Review: Excellent!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought one of these stainless steel varities a year ago from a Longs store here locally. I used it in the morning in my car while driving to work. I loved the fact that you can pick it up with one hand, click the button to open it, drink from it, click again, with one hand to close it, and throw it on the seat with no worry that it will leak, not one drop.
And it will keep coffe hot for about 4 hours. I recently found a new use for it.. I bought a bike to commute back and forth to work and bought a handle bar mounted coffe cup ring and this fits the righ exacly. I can ride, reach with one hand, open it, drink, close it and put it back in the ring with no spills or coffee splashing out when going over bumps.
I disagree with the complaints about washing it. I simply put a few drops of dish washer liquid in it with some hot water, shake it for 15 seconds, empty it through the spout then by unscrewing it, rinse it out with clear water with the same technique and set it aside to dry with the spout open. It's good to go the next morning, completely clean. Why is that so difficult?

I'm buying a new one after about two years of use because it has clogged up with coffee oils after daily use, but it only started slowing down the flow over this last month. I bought a different push button brand at a store the other day and it leaks, unlike the OXO brand. Two years use for $20 isn't bad, but I too wish it could be disassembled for thorough cleaning.

Customer Review: Instructional review-how to clean this mug
Summary: 5 Stars

ok, after reading some reviews with 1-2 stars due to design flaws I figured I'd sacrifice my mug for the greater good. in reality this mug can be taken apart, cleaned, and then put back together (and maintain its spill proof abilities).

Here's the quick run down (from memory): the push button on top is held in place by two small nubs, one on each side. if you pry it off you can do so without breaking the tabs. Doing this will reveal a small Philips head screw. Remove this screw and then the lower suction cup will come out. Pay attention to the parts since you have to reverse this process to put it together. Under the button are several parts that lead down to the spring. you can safely take all of them and give the entire mug a good scrubbing and/or soaking. I was quite disgusted by the amount of gunk buildup existed in my mug (granted I use it daily). When I first put the parts back together the button no longer clicked into place because I put one of the pieces in upside down (just wanted to note this in case anyone thinks they broke their mug in the process). I will say that I broke my button when I pried it off but I used a lot of force. My coworker got his off easily and is drilling a hole in the middle of the button to allow access to the screw so that in the future it will be easier to take apart and clean. Hope this helps everyone and please realize that I won't be held responsible if you break your mug!

Customer Review: Dribbles
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had this mug for 6 months and use it every day. There are a few issues that I now have with it.

It leaks. I loved it for a while for it's convenient one-button access, and it's seal. However, it's not leak-proof. If there is any moisture in the seal, it does not seal. Hydraulics (or something) forces liquid out. The result is a very clever dribble cup that I need to open and manually dry with a napkin -- almost every cup of coffee that I have now. Otherwise it seeps out the seal and lands on my laptop or shirt. Although the Nissan's that I've owned in the past didn't offer the convenient button opening, they didn't dribble through the seal.

It doesn't retain heat as well as the Nissan Vacuum series. I think this is due to the amount of plastic in the top. If they made more of it vacuum stainless and less plastic, it may hold heat better.

It slips out of my backpack pocket. The shape of the mug itself, narrow at the bottom and wider at the middle-top, along with the slipperiness of the stainless surface works against the elastic of my backpack pocket, causing the mug to get squeezed up and out of the pocket. I put Velcro on the mug to better "grip" and interrupt the smoothness of it. I wish Oxo made it wider on the bottom, *and* added a wide rubber band-type grip on the side and bottom. (Bottom, because when it does fall out of my bag as I bike, it hits the road and gets dented.

Customer Review: An Unhygienic design flaw
Summary: 1 Stars

After 5 weeks of daily use, it’s time to throw it away. Despite my best cleaning efforts, the lid eventually began to smell bad. Liquid eventually got trapped inside the hollow area of the lid & is impossible to clean out without breaking the lid open (which I did). The brownish, moldy, & putrefied semi-liquid that came out was beyond disgusting.

To those of you that own this mug, may I suggest?

• Rinse the mug immediately with water after drinking if you can’t wash it right away.

• After washing the lid, give it the “sniff” test. If the lid smells “funny”, or just downright stinks, throw it away or return it & demand your money back. That hollow area inside the lid is a bacterial breeding ground. It’s not worth getting sick over. The lid wasn’t designed to be disassembled. I permanently broke mine when I took it apart.

The spill-proof design of this mug is in my opinion, the best I’ve seen so far. It definitely lives up to the term “spill-proof”, which is why I purchased this mug in the first place. If Oxo can implement a lid design that will disassemble for cleaning, it would fix the only flaw that I can find on an otherwise well made product.

I’m ready to give this product a second try, but right now I & my money will hold-out for version 2.0.

Customer Review: Two years later, still happy.
Summary: 4 Stars

No leaks, no funky smells no hassle for me.

This keeps my coffee acceptably hot. It works better if you pre-heat it with boiling water first, but I rarely have time for that. I went through a year+ of train commuting in my bag without a dent or leak.

You just have to clean it! I use a dish brush and scrub out the rubber seal while it's open, then use the brush to get as much inside as I can from the top and then I rinse it well with hot water.

I drink my coffee black, so I don't get ANY build up or nastiness in my lid. It looks like it's a problem for people who put stuff in their coffee.

I have used it daily for a couple of years and I recommend it. Just take care of it.

If I could I would raise my review to 5 stars.

First off I love the leak free top! I haven't had it long enough to know if that's 100% true, but so far so good!

BUT,
I don't know how other reviewers use their mug, but if you drink your coffee on your morning commute after about 2 hours the last bit is warm at best. I noticed after an hour my coffee cooling off. If you sip a little here and there I can see how it might keep stuff hot for hours..

The stainless interior is great! There is no plastic taste from the top. Like I said, the leak free top is working so far.
