Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug, Stainless Steel

Customer Review: Limited lifespan, but otherwise decent
Summary: 3 Stars

I've owned this mug for something like three years, maybe more. I used it every day at first, then only when I absolutely couldn't find the time to drink my coffee at home before leaving, and now -- never.

Although it was impressively leak-proof in the beginning, it no longer is. Its days of rolling around on the floor of my front seat are over, to say nothing of its days of being shoved into a bag on my way into work. That makes it much less appealing.

The big issue, though, is, as other reviewers have noted, the impossibility of cleaning the lid. I don't put anything in my coffee, so I'm guessing mine lasted longer than it otherwise would have. Anyway, at some point I noticed gunk building up in the lid, and eventually I started tasting the gunk, so I've put the lid through the dishwasher and let it soak in vinegar for *hours*, and the funky taste is still going just as strong as ever.

So now I've got this mug sitting in my cupboard, and I can't just throw it out because it's so sturdy and it served me so well, but I also can't use it, because it no longer works, and well, because it's just freaking gross.

So buy this if you're a diligent college student and you're willing to rinse it immediately after use *and* you won't need it after a year or two, or if you're way into disposable culture and you don't mind throwing things out and replacing them every so often.

If you're looking for an eco-friendly, leak-proof way to keep your morning beverages tasting yummy -- keep looking. (Although, that said, I don't know if there's a better product out there.)

Customer Review: Not for everybody
Summary: 4 Stars

I think this tumbler is great if you're a tea or straight coffee drinker. If you have lattes and mochas every day, I think this may not be for you. Yes the seal is awesome, totally leakproof. The heat retention is great too, especially if you preheat.

BUT...it's true you can't really, truly clean the lid. If I were to drink anything very creamy, chocolatey, or (heaven forbid) with caramel, then it would definitely get stuck inside the lid seal mechanism.

Barring that, it's a great tumbler. Great attention to detail has clearly been paid in the design. The "drinking slope" of the lid was well thought-out; it's comfortable on the lips. The liquid has enough "travel time" out of the hole so as not to scald you. There's a rubber grip indentation, enough to be very comfortable and easy to hold.

One word of caution: don't submerge the lid to clean it. I submerged the lid in soapy water for a few hours in an attempt to clean inside the lid. This wasn't easy, since the lid floats. After I did that, a small amount of liquid became trapped inside and wouldn't come out no matter how I shook it, button up or down. I eventually had to make an even exchange for a new one. Now I never submerge the lid and I haven't had that problem since.

Bottom line: best for "clear" drinks. Don't drink anything thick or creamy, as it can get trapped inside the lid. The lid won't allow for full cleaning access, so rinse quickly after finishing your drink. I think if you can follow those rules, this is a great travel tumbler for you! Oh yeah!

Customer Review: Design flaw
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the best mug I have ever used as far as being spill-proof. I've searched for a mug like this for years. Unfortunately if something is too good to be true, it probably is. This is the case with this wonderful mug. As you may have read from other reviews here, the lid traps all sorts of gunk. After just a week of use, it starts to smell like something has crawled up in there and died. Yes, I use creamer with my coffee. And yes, I wash the mug at the end of the day with hot soapy water. I even let hot water run through the lid for 5-10 minutes. I never put it in the dishwasher. I follow the rules. So my only conclusion is that there is a design flaw.
I called OXO today. They want me to send the lid back and then they will send me a replacement. That's wonderful. But I will not pay to ship the lid back just to receive another one that will start to smell in a week. The representative I spoke with suggested that I wash it right after each use. Yes, I will definitely make sure to use the first available rest stop along the highway just to rinse the lid... Umm.. not practical. It's a TRAVEL mug for heaven's sake.
Some prior reviews have suggested to drill holes in the lid to drain the liquid better, provided instructions on how to disassemble it in order to clean out the gunk, etc. Some were nice enough to caution you that what you see after disassembling the lid might make you toss your cookies. If you want to use a screwdriver every time you wash your lid, this is the mug for you. I'll just keep searching.

Customer Review: Decent mug, can get better for the money
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this item almost four years ago and probably used it for a year or so before putting it aside. As other reviewers have pointed out, it is somewhat difficult to clean, but my main gripe is that the seal on mine isn't 100% leakproof.

I followed all the usual guidelines (don't fill to the top, open the seal before traveling to let steaming liquids "breathe," never put in the dishwasher, make sure it's going into the threads correctly and is down far enough to seal, etc.), but when I would set this down sideways, it would almost always drip just a little bit. Doesn't sound like that big of a deal until that little bit is coffee dripping on clothes in a messenger bag or on a paper copy of a presentation in my front seat. I could literally fill it with room-temperature water, seal it, then have water come out of the body-cap seal when I shook it, so it wasn't just leftovers leaking out of the cap.

My wife eventually got me a Starbucks double-walled travel tumbler as a gift, and I haven't looked back since. It keeps keeps my coffee hot longer than this OXO and never, and I mean never, leaks. Very simple top that is easy to clean and doesn't have an interior chamber to hold tepid water. All for $20 + tax (actually got two on sale recently for $10 apiece).

This isn't a terrible product; you can just easily get a better one for the same amount of money. I still use it once in a while when my other one is dirty or at the office, but I always have to make sure the OXO is in a cup holder.

Customer Review: Still Leaks
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for a good travel mug to purchase. It needed to keep my coffee hot and not burn my hand while drinking, it needed to be somewhat leak proof and it needed to be easy to drink from, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Although I have to say, the Oxo LiquiSeal Mug does not leak as much as other mugs I have tried, but it is not leak proof. I consider leak proof when you can turn the mug full of coffee over and nothing leaks out. This mug will leak and spill if you turn it upsides down. Now mind you, it does not leak on me when I drink from it and how often does someone go around with your mug upsides down, but if a mug advertises leak proof, then it should be leak proof.
The Oxo LiquiSeal Mug does keep my coffee warm longer than any other I have had, so that was great but one other little detail pops up because of the leak proof mechaniam in the lid, it is hard to get all of the coffee out while you at the last of the coffee. It's like when you where a kid, and you help up a coke bottle to get the last drop out of the bottle. I will hold the mug up for several seconds to get a drink from the lasy of the coffee, but knowing that there is quite a bit left in the mug by opening the lid I verifing there was some more left.

I know these points are very trivial to many but seeing this is my review I thought I would share everything.

Overall I would buy another Oxo LiquiSeal Mug for myself if they had a 18oz or larger size available.

Thank You
Chris
