Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Incredibly hard to clean Summary: 2 Stars
I love that this travel mug is airtight, keeps my tea piping hot and my cold drinks super cold for hours. It's also spill proof in the car and easy to drink while driving.
However, as another reviewer mentioned, it's incredible hard to clean this mug. I used this mug at first for my coffee every morning and I always use half and half. I would rinse and wash it out every day like I normally do with travel mugs. After a month, I noticed a strange odor coming from the lid. Upon further inspection and cleaning, I too noticed that there was a lot of crud trapped in the lid mechanism. I ended up cleaning it with a combination of steaming hot tap water, q-tips, and dish detergent. It took me about a half an hour to get everything out. But who has the time to do this every day?
Now I limit its use to plain tea and cold drinks. This is disappointing to me because this mug is pricey as far as travel mugs go.
Customer Review: Not so hot Summary: 3 Stars
My husband and my son both have the Oxo travel mug in plastic and they say that their coffee stays hot for maybe two hours. I wanted my coffee hot for a longer period of time and by the reviews on the stainless mug, read that it would keep the coffee hot up to 7 hours. At 3 hours, it is already cooling down, by 4 hours it is lukewarm. And this is after I poured hot water in it first and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before pouring the coffee into it. My next step will be to put my freshly made coffee in the microwave for 1-2 minutes before putting it in the mug. Perhaps I haven't owned it long enough, but I haven't had any trouble with the uncleanable top. I always rinse it out immediately once the coffee is gone. However, the stainless does seem to keep the coffee odor so it kind of spoils the taste of ice water. It also isn't quite large enough. I like the fact that it doesn't leak but I'm not so sure it's worth the price.
Customer Review: Great Mug, But It Can't Be Cleaned! Summary: 2 Stars
The idea for this mug is good, but like so many others have said it just can't be cleaned. It keeps beverages hot, the seal works great and is convenient, and the mug looks great. But the fatal flaw is that the top can't be cleaned.
I purchased this mug thinking that all of the people saying the mug couldn't be cleaned were just doing it wrong, but that's just not the case. It is practically impossible to clean the top of this mug well. I cleaned with boiling water and soap for a good 10 minutes and I could still smell coffee odors coming from the inside of the top. Those odors would later impart flavor into the drinks I was consuming from the mug; so I just ended up not using the mug anymore.
If OXO could design a mug where the inside of the top could be cleaned this product would be a definite 5 stars.
Maybe a separate threaded cap on the bottom of the top to expose the inner area?
Customer Review: Best Travel Mug Ever Summary: 4 Stars
My husband purchased one of these in a store a few years ago. He still says today that it's the best travel mug ever! It NEVER drips, you can hold it upside down and not a single little drip. It says do not wash in dishwasher on it, but we don't listen. Trying to wash the lid by hand is definitely not easy. I'm somewhat of a germaphobe, so we put it on the top rack and pop the lid open so it gets really rinsed out. I've had to put the little sealing ring back into the lid once, but all it took was a toothpick pushing at the right spots. We are buying a second one today because the clicking button mechanism inside the lid is finally getting stuck (probably because we wash it in the dishwasher). But it's well worth the money and when I told my husband I was buying a replacement for him he said "don't throw away the old one, it's still a good mug". That means a lot that he doesn't want to throw away a slightly broken mug. :D
Customer Review: A great mug! Summary: 5 Stars
This mug was so worth its price. Here are some comments:
1) I make 4 cups (as indicated on the machine) worth of coffee in the morning and then spend hours drinking it. The best thing about this mug is that it will keep the coffee at least moderately warm until well into the afternoon. If you pre-heat (which I don't), it probably would keep it even warmer.
2) I have found that it will leak a little if you don't follow certain precautions: Don't overfill it (leave at least 1/2" at the top (where the black meets the silver) and leave the top in the open position when you screw it on--otherwise it might compress the liquid and spurt out later). Also, it will leak if there's any "backwash" from a recent sip in the lid mechanism.
3) The directions say "do not place in the dishwasher," but I put it in the dishwasher every night with no obvious ill effect. (I don't use heated dry.)
