Customer Review: Can be cleaned. Watch for drips after filling.

I'm ordering a replacement Oxo mug to for the one I lost a couple of weeks ago. I'm giving this mug 4 stars because I really like its construction, ability to keep coffee hot and its sealing mechanism. I would recommend this mug to anyone but feel there are two things you must consider (after all, it is a $20 coffee cup).
1) Cleaning - much has been said about the difficulty in cleaning the top and the disgusting sludge and or mold that can accumulate inside. I found that you can successfully clean the top by rinsing it out at the end of each day with hot water. Press the "open" button and flush hot water from the bottom to the top. You can see the little "scabs" of coffee/cream residue come out. At least once a week I would soak the lid in denture cleaner for a few hours and rinse. You can see more junk come out. Somewhere buried in the reviews here I read about how to disassemble the lid for a complete cleaning. Its not that difficult. Looking down on the top of the lid the little button with the word "Oxo" on it actually has a small rubber cap on it. You can pry this off with a small knife or screwdriver. Caution! You may not get it back on correctly. Mine eventually fell off but it really doesn't effect anything. Under the button is a tiny Philips head screw that you can remove with a jeweler's or eyeglass screwdriver. After you remove that screw you can disassemble the mechanism. Pay attention to how the parts come out or you wont get it back together functioning correctly. Once it is disassembled you can see the junk that collects inside and can clean it out. I did this two or three times until I convinced myself that the denture cleaner soaking was sufficient. Frankly, I think Oxo should redesign this mug so the lid is easier to take apart for cleaning. It would make it a 5-star cup in my book.
2) Leaking. You can get some leaking if there is coffee in the lid and you push the button closed. It is not 100% spill proof. But more importantly, when you first fill the mug up with warm coffee and screw the lid on you cannot have the lid in the closed position and tilt the mug or hot coffee will leak from where the lid screws into the mug. I assume this has something to do with air expansion when you first put hot liquid inside. Several times I've spilled hot coffee on myself by trying to take a drink from the mug with the button in the closed position and gotten dripped on. I don't know if I'd call this a design flaw, but I certainly wish Oxo had put up some sort of warning.
Hopefully this will help you make a decision about buying this mug. By the way, Oxo also makes a plastic mug version of this cup for about half the price. The lid looks basically the same. I don't know if the plastic mug is the same size or not or if it keeps coffee as hot as the stainless steel version. But it is a cheaper alternative.
