Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Ice Cube TrayCustomer Review: Could not expect anything better. Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered one of these and used it for a couple of months. Then bought 4 more with the 4-for-3 sale. I absolutely love them!
In MY freezer, filling the cups about 3/4 full, the lid slides fairly well and each cube comes out easily with a slight twist on the tray.
It's possible that variations in people's freezer temperatures might make the lid a little harder to slide. But my guess is that some people overfill the tray. And, we are talking expansion and compression when it comes to water going into a plastic that is moved in and out of freezing temperatures. I'll bet the OXO people spent alot of time researching the plastic to use, lid size, etc.
Beware of bad reviews of this product. Some of their ignorance shows in their own words.
Customer Review: Needs improvement Summary: 3 Stars
This product will rock your faith in the OXO Good Grips people. The leaders in kitchen design need to rethink the lid; its hard to believe they released this product to the market. One reviewer is absolutely correct in advising users not to overfill. The lid will not freeze to the tray, but it is nonetheless a poor design. Even sliding the lid on and off with an empty tray is awkward; add water and it becomes more difficult. Once you get it into the freezer (and you didn't overfill) the experience improves. The sturdy tray will not crack before the ice, and provides great "twist and crack" action. The cubes are close enough to "normal" size to be useful. I haven't tested the lid's long-term performance in the prevention of freezer burn, yet.
Customer Review: Good for what it is Summary: 3 Stars
From the illustration and description I'd hoped that the seal between the tray and its cover would be waterproof. This isn't the case, but that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the product. I like the crescent shaped ice cubes, it's easy to fill and hold thanks to its shape, and I suspect that the relatively shallow cubes may even form more rapidly than those in other trays. That said, I'd hoped this tray would solve the problem of water dripping all over the place when placing the tray in the freezer, it doesn't. Also, it's somewhat wide and doesn't fit in my freezer compartment's door trays - which is somewhat annoying. Thus, 3 stars... good and bad, worth a consideration if you want to buy an ice cube tray.
Customer Review: Clean cubes...tricky tray Summary: 3 Stars
I expected this product to be a little weightier - the plastic isn't as heavy-duty as I would have liked. I suppose it's so you can twist the ice out, but the result is that the plastic appears a little warped, and the tray still isn't so flexible that the cubes just pop right out. I wanted it because I loved the idea of keeping freezer debris and "freezer flavor" out of my ice, but the lid isn't smooth on the track. When you fill the tray and try to slide the lid closed, it sticks, and so some of the water splashes out. I really didn't think twice about ordering it because I have always known my OXO products to be fabulous, but these are just o.k. As far as I have seen though, it's the only ice tray with a lid.
Customer Review: Inferior Product Summary: 2 Stars
I bought these mainly because I was hoping they would be easy to stack in my freezer. They don't stack any better than regular trays. The tray is shaped in such a way that all extra water flows off the tray and onto the floor; rather than most trays where the extra water flows into the next cube.I've actually taken to filling the trays in the freezer with my brita pitcher to avoid carrying the trays across the kitchen. The cover sticks making it very difficult to slide it on without the water falling all over the floor. Once the ice cubes are actually made it performs well. You can serve the ice cubes one by one. But honestly, I'm thinking I'll just go back to regular trays.
