Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Ice Cube TrayCustomer Review: Poorly Designed, Disappointing from OXO Good Grips Summary: 2 Stars
Every other Good Grips product I own was designed thoughtfully: they're high quality, attractive, and very easy to use. Unfortunately, this ice cube tray is an exception on every count. The single biggest problem with this product is the tray cover. OXO started with a good idea: use a cover to keep the cubes fresh and to make it easy to remove just the cubes you want. Unfortunately, this tray's cover is so poorly designed that it's not nearly worth the trouble. First, it's very difficult to remove the cover to get your ice cubes out. The cover supposed to slide off easily, but it usually gets stuck, because it doesn't fit properly and because little bits of ice easily obstruct the path. Getting cubes out is bad enough, but the cover is even worse when you're filling the tray. Again, because it doesn't fit very well, it requires a lot of force to push the cover on. Inevitably, you'll have to force it into place and end up splashing a lot of the water out of the cube compartments. This makes your cubes smaller, and the splashed water freezes into little bits of ice that make the cover harder to get off later. As for asthetics, the tray isn't as good as other OXO products either. It's missing their signature black-rubber grips and offers little else in return. So, my recommendation is to wait for version 2 before you leap for this product. But, in the meantime, check out other Good Grips products. Fortunately, this product's poor design is an exception for OXO.
Customer Review: Good for certain uses Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this ice cube tray because I'm in a wheelchair and it's been a challenge to lift an ordinary ice cube tray into the freezer without spilling any of the water. I figured having the cover on the tray would allow me to make ice cubes without spilling the water. It didn't really work out that way, though.
The cover slides on to the tray, but the cover doesn't fit tightly over the tray, and so isn't water-tight. It's marginally better than an uncovered tray, because it's harder to spill water out from sides of the tray (where the cover latches to the tray), but the front and back of the tray are left open, so water can still spill out from there.
Where the cover is helpful is in stacking. If you've got a couple of trays, you can put this tray on bottom and put another tray on top of it.
Another helpful aspect of the tray is the design of the cube compartments. Instead of being rectangular, they're rounded at the bottom. That means that you can push on one end of the cube, and it will rotate up so you can take it out. It makes getting the cubes out a little bit easier.
On the whole, if you're handicapped like me, I would look for another covered tray system that forms a better seal. But if all you're looking to do is stack trays, you could do worse than buying yourself a couple of these.
Customer Review: Tray For Making Ice Cubes - Speaking The Obvious. Summary: 3 Stars
I was shopping around for an ice cube tray that can seal in the ice and keep it fresh. I do not like the flavor of cubes left open in the freezer. I purchased those close-bottled trays with a screw cap, but the ice cubes have very little volume and melts quite fast. This OXO tray caught my eye on amazon so I decided to give it a shot. I really should of had listened to the golden rule of always looking at something in person before buying. It does not seal ice cubes from being contaminated, but nowhere did it ever claim that. I should of had been more keen on my part. I can think of a few reasons otherwise, but I do not feel there is a need for the cover if it doesn't seal the cubes properly. To be fair, the cubes does turn out with sufficient volume and is quite solid. The tray can be a hassle removing straight out of the freezer, but I rarely had problems with that if I am careful when filling water into the tray and aligning the cover properly. I also keep plenty of frozen meats and vegetables in the freezer, and it is important to me in having a ice cube tray that seals properly. I will continue my search for a sturdy sealable tray. I will post an update if I find one that I have tested.
Customer Review: Tremendous Product Innovation Summary: 5 Stars
I am really surprised to see that the reviews for this product are so mixed. My family's experience with the Oxo Good Grips Ice Cube tray has been inarguably positive. In my mind, the purpose of an ice cube tray is to make ice cubes, and that experience has traditionally had three problems, all of which have been elegantly solved by the Oxo tray:
1) Water spilling out of the uncovered ice cube trays en route to the freezer [Problem solved: Oxo tray's covers prevent water from spilling out]
2) Other items in the freezer falling into the not-yet-frozen ice cube compartments and freezing there [Problem solved: Oxo tray's covers prevent things from falling into the ice cube compartments]
3) Ice cubes in the bottom tray (if stacked) crystallizing and being totally impossible to get out of the tray [Problem solved: both top and bottom trays of ice cubes release perfectly every time]
The Oxo trays solve all of these problems and deliver perfect ice cubes every time. I couldn't recommend this product more highly.
Customer Review: Nice Idea, Poor Execution Summary: 2 Stars
I'm an owner of more than ten other OXO products, and I bought their ice cube tray expecting a five star experience. Unfortunately, this tray falls far short.Bad: - As other reviewers have mentioned, I have a very hard time with the covers. It's almost impossible to get them on without spilling water out the ends, and equally difficult to remove them after freezing. I don't overfill the cubes (about 3/4 water level seems right) nor am I impatient - it is a matter of poor fit. - If you're not careful, the shape of the tray makes it easy to spill water off the ends. Other ice cube trays have a lip on both sides. If you overfill or wobble on the way to the freezer, you will spill water with the OXO tray. Good: - The tray material is flexible and durable. It is very easy to get cubes out. Bottom Line: - This is a usable ice cube tray that will probably last a long time. If OXO corrects the lid fit problem and tendency for the tray to spill out the ends, I'd give it at least 4 stars. As it stands now, 2 stars.
