Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips Classic Tea Kettle, Brushed StainlessCustomer Review: Sadly, I'm Still Searching for the Perfect Tea Kettle Summary: 3 Stars
Well, I finally had bought this kettle and used it for the first time today. Imagine my surprise when I discovered hot water all over the stove top! After opening the whistle cover (thinking the water had come out of the spout opening--perhaps I had filled the kettle with just a little too much water and it had boiled over out of the spout), I saw that the water continued to accumulate on the stove top while I was mopping it up. I looked at the spout and saw a fast leak from the seam where spout was welded to kettle body. After I had emptied the kettle, I held it at eye level and on the left-hand side of the spout saw light coming through about a half inch slit in the seam.
Even without this major problem, this kettle was not the perfect kettle, though I was going to settle with it. Just a few features caused me some concern.
Inside of the kettle's opening, the metal is curved underneath. This probably wouldn't be such a big problem, but I think it could have been finished in a better way than this.
Also, around the spout and whistle cover, some of the metal pieces scrapped at my fingers. While not so sharp that they would cut upon contact, I almost did get a nice scrape on some fingers.
The lid is very tight and hard for me to put on and pull off. I have arthritis, so this is a bit of a problem. And, finally, the handle is also very stiff--very hard for me to move it. Others without issues with their fingers/hands might not find these factors to be a problem at all.
Overall, despite the rip in the spout's seam and the other issues I found to be somewhat challenging to me, this teapot is fairly well designed and sturdy.
This is the third teapot that I have bought and had to return for refund. The first two (bought at two other online sellers) both had rust in their spouts upon arrival or within the first couple of weeks and were returned for full refund.
I wonder if I will ever find the perfect teapot like the little one that I accidentally let all the water boil out of and charred. I will endeavor to clean the remaining charring with a vinegar and baking soda solution (soaked overnight) and some elbow grease and bar keeper's friend. However, this teapot is little (about 1 qt, if that) and I sustained minor burns to my fingers and hand sometimes when the lid fell off or the water splattered (you had to leave it slightly ajar when pouring or the water would gush out and splatter badly). Except for its size and problems resulting from its size, this would be the perfect teapot!
With the seam splitting problem of this kettle, I don't trust that a replacement wouldn't also slit its seam in the future, so I asked for a refund. Amazon's return process is wonderful! I was able to print the return documents and a prepaid label, so I won't be out any money on the return shipping as the item was defective.
I gave this kettle 3 stars as it was sturdy and fairly well designed, despite the spout's seam rip. Bad workmanship in that doesn't necessarily negate the good points of the kettle.
