Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of OXO Good Grips 4-Cup Fat SeparatorCustomer Review: knock out the fat Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my OXO 4-cup fat separator for at least 3 years and it has become one of my most-used kitchen items because it really is incredibly versatile. When I first got it my only intent was to use it as a traditional fat seperator. But it can be used as a measuring cup, a mixing cup, or a vessel to chop things in or store in. I also use it as a marinater too. And with its ergonomic handle and slim design it fits very nicely in my fridge door. And it's also very helpful for when I am making something that needs a large amount of liquid added to it quickly (such as rice) because I can stir everything inside of it. It washes great in the dishwasher (both top and bottom rack). I have used this countless times to make gravy, sauces, stocks and broth and it's always such a breeze. It comes with a rubber stopper (half the time you don't even need this) and a plastic lid that also doubles as a strainer (both of these items are also dishwasher safe). I purchased mine at Wegmans, of all places (a place I no longer shop at because they're quality, service and prices are all abhorrent). Needless to say, the price on Amazon is much better than Wegmans. OXO also offers a lifetime warranty with all of their products, so there's really no reason to choose any other brand, IMO.
Customer Review: Melting danger Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this item thinking that a plastic fat separator would be more durable than a glass one. Then I got to thinking, "doesn't plastic melt?" and if so, then why would I pour oven temperature liquid into this thing? So I contacted Oxo. And I contacted them again. And again. Three times I spoke to someone in customer service, including one instance where the customer service rep tried transferring me to their "product engineering department." No one at Oxo was willing or able to tell me the actual temperature this product (or their other fat separator) was "heat resistant" to. (I should note that my concern wasn't exclusively whether the separator would literally melt, but also whether at certain higher temperatures the plastic might start to give off certain chemical nastinesses to my foods.) I eventually returned this item in favor of a glass separator.
"Heat resistant" means nothing. My fingers are in fact "heat resistant," but that doesn't mean I'm going to stick them in a pan of 350 degree oil. By the same token, I'm not going to put 350 degree oil in something unless I know it is safe to do so.
Customer Review: Best Fat Separator I've found... Summary: 4 Stars
When my boyfriend accidentally snapped the spout off my glass fat separator, I was devastated. He bought me this one as a replacement and I was skeptical at first- because I loved the quality of the glass separator and how well it cleaned up. Now, I'm glad he broke the first one!
This is dishwasher safe, so it's easy to clean and I've had no problems with any kind of staining. The four-cup capacity is great, as well as the comfortable rubber handle. The raised area behind the spout helps you not to spill as you tilt the cup forward to pour. But, the best part is the little rubber stopper in the pour spout. Just leave it in as you pour in your stock. When you're ready to separate, just pull it out and the vacuum that was created doesn't allow ANY fat up into the pour spout. I was amazed!
The only reason why I gave this four instead of five stars is because of the strainer on top. The holes are really too large to be useful and I always place another fine mesh strainer on top (you could also use cheesecloth).
Overall: great quality, cleans up easily, and is large enough to be useful.
Customer Review: Works perfectly - fat-free broth! Summary: 4 Stars
I positively love my OXO fat separator! It holds a good amount of liquid, but not so much as to be difficult to pour. The lid helps strain out the solids, but if you want your broth to be absolutely clear, put a piece of cheesecloth over the lid.
IMPORTANT - the little black stopper MUST be inserted in the pouring spout before you add liquids to the cup or the fat will simply rise up in the spout. The stopper creates a vacuum, forcing the fat into the main body of the cup. When you're ready to pour, remove the stopper and the fat will remain floating in the body of the cup.
This cup is made out of high-quality plastic and washes up well in the dishwasher. It doesn't stain when you wash it with the tomato sauces! I've used mine for a couple of years and it's as good as new. I wouldn't make gravy or broth without it.
Customer Review: Awesome Tool for Removing Fats from any Cooking Liquids Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this fat separating measuring cup a few months ago and it has been a fantastic help in the kitchen. I honestly don't know how I lived without it before (I used to skim fat out of the pan with a spoon during cooking which is a pain in the neck).
This is the perfect size to separate pan juice or slow cooker juices to make gravy, and will allow you to get all of the flavor from drained meat, vegetables, and pasta without including the fat.
Some reviews have said that the fat does not separate correctly, but I have found that if the stopper is used as the instructions state, it works perfectly. Also, I have not had any problems with cleaning. Rinse the cup with hot water and a little bit of dish soap and then run it through your dishwasher on the top rack and it comes out sparkling every time.
