Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Northern Industrial #12 Electric Meat GrinderCustomer Review: leave blade and plate in for sausage Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't used yet, but needed to research how to support auger, since instructions say to remove blade and plates for sausage, manual is wrong, found the following in a review at manufact. web page, from someone who uses it only for sausage, need to keep blade in too, not just plate, other reviewer likely used plate without blade which would make it hard to push sausage through plate:
.
.The only improvement that could possibly be made is not with the product, but with the instruction manual. The manual instructs you to remove the grinder plate and cutter when installing the stuffing tube for stuffing sausage. This will not work as the grinder plate also serves as the front bearing surface for the auger. When removed, the auger is not supported at the front and will work its way out from the motor housing connection socket. (no big deal as it comes out for cleaning anyway, but you can't stuff sauges in this configuration). So, I put the grinder plate and blade back in, then put on the stuffing tube and "wala", it worked like a charm.
Customer Review: I have only one problem with this product Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this product last month and, overall, it is wonderful! Having had to use a hand grinder to grind up chicken necks for our cats, I realize that the appreciation/gratitude quotients for a product like this go way up. I have been able to grind 3 lbs of chicken necks in less than 10 minutes with this meat grinder. At 1000 Watts and .8 HP, it powers through the job without a single snag. I've used it three times so far and I must say the performance and the easy assembly and clean-up of this machine make it a very, very worthwhile purchase for me. Especially at this great price!
The one glitch, for me, is that the housing that the meat goes through, as well as the meat auger are both made of aluminum. And, while this makes the unit lighter and less prone to rusting, I am one who tends to avoid aluminum at all costs so, for me, this is a definite turn-off.
Otherwise, it is a great product that works like a charm and is easy to assemble, disassemble and clean.
Customer Review: Okay grinder, very poor stuffer Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this grinder so I could have a grinder and sausage stuffer as an 'all in one' unit. I bought pork and ground it up, ready to add seasoning and then stuff into the sausage casing. The rating of 176lb per hour is optimistic, but it does work okay.
I reconfigured the auger for sausage stuffing, but the poor directions left me wondering if it was set up right. There is no front end support for the auger shaft, so before you put meat in the input, the auger grinds on the housing, metal on metal.
I stuffed several feet of 19mm casing, but it took much longer and more work than I had expected. A lot of meat is left in the auger assy. and there is no way to get it into the casing.
So...it grinds fine, bad directions, poor at stuffing a 19mm casing. I bought a vertical stuffer and it works wonderfully. If you buy this unit, buy it as a grinder only.
Customer Review: Second time the charm.... Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this grinder for multi-purpose use, both for pet food and for human use. The third or fourth time I used it, grinding turkey meat, the grinder made a clunking noise and stopped. The motor would run but the shaft would not turn. I disassembled it, cleaned all the removable parts, put it all back together, and still nothing. On picking up the grinder, I could hear something rattling around that sounded like it was in the motor casing, and preventing the shaft from turning.
I called Northern, who, no questions asked, said they'd send another grinder. They did, that very day, plus a pre-paid UPS label to send the faulty one back. The replacement has been running very well so far, knock wood, several weeks into receiving it, and I'm pleased with the performance.
I'm even more pleased with the customer service.
Customer Review: Fast, durable Summary: 4 Stars
The product does a nice job. As another reviewer mentioned, it is easy to put the cutting blade in backwards. The drawing in the instructions looks like it was made by a 3-year old and is not very clear. So make sure the blade faces the grinder plate. Also, even after drying and coating with oil some metal parts will still turn the oil black.
The machine feels heavy duty, very durable and powerful. I am happy with the performance so far. I just ground up 5.25 pounds of pork in just under 5 minutes using the coarse plate with the larger holes. The other plates with smaller holes will take more time. Still a good job I think. Also, the shipping charge is high and tax was charged even though the company does not have a POS in my home state.
