Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Northeastern Products Cedarific Natural Cedar Chips Cat Litter, 50 Liter BagCustomer Review: The Magic Litter Formula! Summary: 5 Stars
I've done it!!! I've finally figured out the magic formula for an odorless, easy to maintain litter box!
However, before I divulge my magic formula, I must launch into an intro:
First of all, I have four cats, 2 of them are large males whose life purposes are to poop and pee, apparently. We used to have a hooded litter box. We progressed from using regular clumping litter to using non-clumping then we switched to World's Best Cat Litter. Cost-wise, a similar brand called Exquisicat was better for us. After a while though, I noticed that the corn litter would start getting this smell. I can only describe it as a "dirty barnyard" stench. It didn't matter how many times we scooped in a day, after a few days, the corn litter would adopt that smell.
About three weeks ago, I finally threw up my hands and told myself that I would go on the hunt for the perfect way to cure this litterbox problem. My den smelled like a barn, scooping took forever and it was making me unhappy. I spent hours poring over the reviews on Amazon. I made a purchase of three items totalling almost a hundred dollars! But you know what? My den no longer smells bad, the kitties are happy and it takes less than three minutes to clean out the litterbox.
First, I purchased this litter: Swheat Scoop Multi Cat Natural Wheat Cat Litter, 25 Pound Bag Now, I would like to note that the formula I concocted involved mixing this litter with the wheat litter: These two together provide major odor control! I think this cedar litter is actually key to the odor control because I can really tell a difference.
I simply placed about two to three inches of the wheat litter in the OmegaPaw litter box Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box, Large, Green and Beige with about two to three cups of the cedar litter. The Omega Paw is awesome too! I just roll it then the clumps end up in this receptacle that I simply dump into the toilet and flush away!
Customer Review: Worst. Litter. Ever. Summary: 1 Stars
After the flushable clay litter I was using got discontinued, I was looking for a cheap alternative, as most of the natural, flushable litters are pretty pricy, especially if you don't know that your cat will even use it. The guy at the pet shop recommended "soft clumping" cedar litter (can't find the clumping one on Amazon), since it was only 7 or 8 bucks for a huge bag. So I gave it a try, optimistically thinking I found the perfect litter - cheap, natural, affordable and clumping, too. Boy, was I wrong. First of all, I tried to get my cat used to it by mixing it with some of her old clay litter. This worked until I ran out of her old litter and had to use just the cedar. For a whole day she refused to use it and I started to worry. Then she finally used it a bit, so I figured it was ok. But then, for the first time EVER, in all my years owning cats, including the three I've had this one, she actually pooped on the floor! Luckily, she caved in after that and started using it. But I would have been better off listening to her and just dumping the whole batch. The litter was advertised as "soft clumping," but it might as well have not been clumping, as the clumps crumbled the second they were touched. What ended up happening instead, is the urine-soaked litter got mixed in with the dry until I had to change the whole litter box both for my sake and my cat's. This stuff does nothing for the odors. And the worst part, by far (besides the initial feces on my floor), is that the litter is so light and dusty that my cat would trail it not just around her litter box, but my entire apartment. I would find the stuff in my BED! I NEVER had any problem like that with any litter. I'm still finding this stuff in corners even though I got rid of the whole batch already. This stuff is as useful as pencil shavings. Some things just should not be used as litter.
I've since tried World's Best, which both my cat and I are happy with, but it's a bit too pricy. Swheat Scoop is next on my list, because it seems similar to World's Best, only cheaper. But anything has to be better than this junk. Stay away.
Customer Review: Compared to other litters.... Summary: 5 Stars
I have two large cats. They use the largest litter box we could find, and use it several times a day. We have tried every type of litter on the market: clay, clumping, crystals, Feline Pine, and now this- Cedarific, which is AMAZING. Here are 5 reasons why:
1. Large cats = heavy, large waste. Cedar chips are like saw dust and weigh nothing. I am able to lift the largest bag (about the size of the largest dog food bag) over my head!
2. When they use it, it smells like cedar. Or wet cedar really. It doesn't smell like waste being covered up by fragrance.
3. All cats will drag a bit of the litter with them when they are done. Saw dust is very easy to sweep up, and if you have guests, it isn't obviously cat litter. Clay would get stuck to the cats feet, and floor. Plus there was a great deal of dust involved. Cedar is very light, and some will fly away, but it is very easy to sweep, and won't stick to your cats or floors.
4. Long lasting. We were using 1 large Tidy Cats yellow bin every 2 weeks. Now, we use one large bag of Cedarific once a month. It is more expensive, but since we use less, it saves us money.
5. It is biodegradable! Great for landfills. *They say it can be composted, but honestly, NEVER try to compost litter waste. That is not only gross, but it smells, and attracts animals and bugs. It's the same reason why you never compost meats, bones and oils. They attract scavengers.
You can find cedar type litters in most whole foods, and natural pet stores. Hopefully they will hit the regular markets soon!! Cats rule!
Customer Review: It's the little things that make life better Summary: 5 Stars
Cedarfic cat litter is by far the best litter out there. I'm puzzled as to why it is not more readily available - and frustrated, too. It actually smells GOOD, like, well, fresh cedar. It's very, very lightweight. I just scoop the solids out and then, when it's old and does start to smell a little, I just dump it in a trash bag, rinse out the pan with water, dry it with paper towels, and that's it. No mess that you have to scrape or scrub out of the pan, ever, like with all other litters. I have 2 cats, and one box of this litter lasts about 2 weeks when the weather's bad and they're indoors; longer if they're spending time outside. AND if you're conscious of your cat's health and prefer natural products, this is FAR superior to the pine, wheat and corn products I have tried, with regard to odor, weight, ease of clean-up, tracking, everything. It is such a superior product and saves me enough annoyance and time on a regular basis that I have resorted to buying it in huge quantities, online, and paying about as much in shipping as I do for the actual litter. To me, a notorious penny-pincher, it's worth it. It still works out to a comparable price to other litters because it lasts so long. There used to be one grocery store in town that carried it, and they no longer do.
Customer Review: cedarific Summary: 5 Stars
I have two cats that turned up on my doorstep the same cold winter night. One is a true farm tom cat and the other I believe might have been a pet to someone in her first few months. Anyway, knowing these cats have never used a little box I was really concerned bringing them indoors. I prefer to use all natural products so I thought I should try to find the same for them. This litter is great. It does control the odor extremely well and while the bad review comments are not 100% false what I have found to work is a thin layer of pine pellets, a layer of pine clumping litter then a load of the cedarific on top. The pine pellets are a great absorbent, the clumping pine takes care of the cedarific soft crumbles. The cedarific does track easier than other litter but I put a wee wee pad in front of the box with a litter mat on top which does help, but the fact that they both use the litter box without a problem is well worth a tiny wood chip here or there. Nothing a dust pan can't fix quick. You would never ever know I have cats if you didn't see them. It isn't inexpensive to do it this way but I only have to change out once a week with two cats. if they didn't like the litter it would cost more to replace whatever they used instead of the box- I am a huge fan of this litter.
