Customer Review: Best thing since sliced bread... Realy!

My husbands Grandmother had a different style of these that she called a "butter bell." I'm not sure if that was the proper name or because it's shaped like a bell. Any how, my husband loved going to their house as a child and young adult and many of his fond memories involed her home cooked meals, and also the use of the butter bell. He said he rememberd his gram had the tastiest everything, right down to her butter. His mother used the old-fashioned butter dish with lid, and though the butter was always soft, it would sometimes get that not-so-fresh taste after a few days.
About a year ago, after the death of my husband's grandmother I decided to find him a "butter bell." I was browsing dishes and housewares on Amazon or Ebay, I don't remember which, and found the Norpro Butter Keeper. I only found a few in my search and since I have very strict color requirements for my kitchen this little number was perfect. The blue ring is Cobalt Blue.
I have since found many other sites touting their butter contraptions, but this little guy is litterally the best thing since sliced bread. It is much different in design from my husbands gram's but the idea is the same. My brother-in-law is a chef and he says that the original butter bell design was developed in France.
I have noticed a few flaws, but I'm still giving it 5 stars because it's still by far the best way to store butter and keep it soft. Because I'm willing to overlook these flaws but some may not want to give this little guy the benefit of doubt, I'll list the flaws to let you all decide for yourselves.
Flaw one, the better falls out. You have to soften the butter naturally on the counter in the bell before squishing it into the bell of the Butter Keeper. If you soften the butter in the microwave it get's too oily and will slip out of the bell and fall in the water when you turn the bell upside down to put it in the crock. This isn't that huge of a deal since the butter stays separate from the water. It's just anoying.
Flaw two, mold. You MUST change the water ever couple days, the water will get moldy and grow things because the warm wet crock is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria if the water level gets too low.
Flaw three, the open bell shape. My husbands grandmother's "butter bell" was an inverted bell with a smaller opening than the space inside the "bell." this allowed you to stuff it with butter but assured the butter wouldn't fall out. Because of the open bell shape of the Butter Keeper the butter often falls out and floats in the water until you discover it. If they fixed this flaw I have no doubt the first flaw I listed would be gone as well.
These three things aren't much of a worry because I love this little thing. We use it constantly and I have since retired my Fiesta butter dish to the cabinet only to bring it out for large family style dinners where you need more than one butter dish on the table. This brings me to the set of 4 mini butter keepers I've seen listed on Amazon. If I had these, I think I'd retire my butter dish for good. :)
