It's a handy compact tool that I've so far used to slice bread from my bread machine. I had to bend out the tines to fit the loaves. It tends to slip a bit while I'm slicing but I still get more regular size than by eyeball. It fits my kitchen more than the plastic box slicers that are the other options on amazon.
Description of Norpro Slicing and Carving Aid
The Norpro Slicing and Carving Aid lets you quickly and easily slice roasts, ham, sausage, and loaves of bread without getting your hands dirty. It holds food securely and keeps your hands well away from knife blades while helping you to create even slices. The slicing aid expands to hold items up to 5 1/2 inches in diameter and has a heavy duty locking spring for compact storage. Hand washing is recommended.This "handy" gadget acts as an extension of your fingers to stabilize bread or roasts while you slice in safety. The tines of the slicing aid are spaced about 1/4-inch apart for even roast slices or uniformly cut sandwich bread. Be careful to hand-wash this item and dry it carefully as the aluminum may otherwise become discolored. --Julija Gelazis
