I found the Norpro professional meat tenderizer a very useful tool for effectively tenderizing less tender cuts of meats and also for pounding seasonings into meat. I liked the long, sharp prongs much better than the usual shallow, dull surfaces of other tenderizers. This tenderizer has a retracting platform that protects the user from being injured on the spikes. However, after a few months' light use, the spring on my tenderizer broke and no longer controls the platform. The spikes are now exposed at all times, resulting in several minor injuries to hands, or whatever body part comes in contact with it. This product was wonderful while it lasted, but now is a hazard.

It measures 7.5"/19cm, has 24 stainless steel prongs and hand washing is recommended.This professional-grade tool, with stainless-steel prongs to break down tough meat fibers, provides controlled, uniform meat tenderizing. You can also use it to pierce meats before they're marinated so flavors penetrate deeply. The 2-inch-diameter plastic disk on the bottom is spring-loaded. It provides precise control when the tenderizer's handle is pushed down, so the prongs pass through the disk's holes and into the meat. When you release downward pressure, the handle springs up again, poised to tenderize another section with the same smooth, uniform action.
