I bought this to mimic the buttery-soft oven baked garlic served at a French bistro in Chicago. While the restaurant provides the recipe to replicate their baked garlic , I figured it'd be cool to have a garlic baker so I bought this based on the good review.
My experiences have been okay, but not great. Garlic is soft, but not as soft as I'd like, and takes a looong time to cook (about 1.5 hours to get the garlic soft enough to spread on bread). Also the size is a little tricky: quite roomy for one clove, cramped for two. If I spend 1+ hour baking this in the oven, I wish it was a little bigger so I could do more than two cloves at a time.
Also, the little garlic handle on top is quite useless and makes it impossible, just by 1/2-inch or so, to fit in my toaster oven. So I need to use my big oven, which takes much longer to preheat and uses so much more energy than my handy little toaster oven. Not cool. Oh and if you choose to drizzle oil on top of the clove and it gets on the non-coated surfaces, it will most likely never get out. This was a turn off for me, as I could envision this cooker getting gross after several uses.
After having several mediocre results with this cooker, I elected to use the restaurants's recipe, which called for just using a oven-safe dish filled with 1/2-inch of water, covered in foil. Much better results in shorter time (less than an hour). Buttery smooth garlic you can spread on your bread with butter. Best of all, it FITS in my toaster oven which saves time AND energy!
Bottom line: I'll probably give it away when I move next year.

I grow and eat lots of organic garlic ... Every summer you can see the huge purple orbs of garlic blooms right in my front courtyard garden, alongside other beautiful (yet less practical) flowers. The Norpro Garlic Baker is large enough to easily accommodate a big head of elephant garlic or several smaller heads of regular garlic. And it's so easy! You just whack the top end of the entire garlic head off before baking, and the naked cloves are easy-peezie to remove from the outer coverings once it's cooked. I like to soak the lid of my Norpro in water before baking, as that keeps the garlic head extra moist while it's cooking. The best part: my garlic is being cooked while I'm preparing the rest of my meal, so the Norpro allows me to multi-task! Being a collector of kitchen gadgets, I purchased this a few years ago and it disappeared among the other items in my collection. I found it recently and bought some fresh garlic, drizzled it with olive oil, and sprinkled some fresh thyme over it. About 45 minutes later, the house was filled with the aroma of roasted garlic....YUMMM!!! I have used roasted garlic with mashed potatoes and will never again do it any other way. The Norpro works much better than foil as it bakes the garlic more evenly. I use this item all the time now and just toss it in the oven when I'm roasting another main dish or casserole. It's so good that you may find yourself wanting more than one, as there is nothing that tastes better than food smothered in roasted garlic.Customer Review: Simplicity At It's Best!

The Garlic Baker is simply one of my favorite kitchen "things" ever! Nothing beats the flavor of fresh baked/roasted garlic spread directly onto bread or into buttered mashed potatoes, and just about everyone agrees that garlic is very good for you (but perhaps not for your breath :-)
Following the included instructions will have you producing yummy, perfectly prepared, butter-soft garlic on your first try. With a little experimentation, you will likely find ways of making your own special variation (my daughter uses olive oil flavored with jalopenos).
This roaster is is very easy to use, and the glazed bottom makes clean up a breeze (there are other brands that are not glazed).
Highly recommended!

I got one for a gift years ago, and I just recently bought one for my mom for a gift. The design has not changed at all. This can fit 2-3 whole garlic bulbs in it, 4 if they are of a small size. It can also roast onions and apples according to the package, but I have never used mine for that. Maybe I will have to try that.
The garlic turns out very mild and spreadable, like butter. Very nice. You can either bake in the oven or use in the microwave, but I suggest baking. It just turns out so much nicer.
Clean up is a bit of a hassle because you can't put it in the dishwasher and you have to clean it by hand.
This is a must if you are a garlic lover.
