Because I purchased this in the off season I tested it on a couple of potatoes and apples to see how it would work.
You have to assemble the crank which wasn't complicated. The construction appears solid. I had some trouble attaching the corer to the counter and had to adjust the rubber foot to properly secure things. Even after this the corer wobbled and spun slightly during use.
This device has an attachment that cores and slices and a second attachment that peels. When both are used you can peel, core and slice in one go. You cannot peel and core without slicing which is what I was looking for. Norpro has a product that will do this or I can buy an attachment for the one I have now (according to the instructions booklet given with my corer).
The peeling attachment can be adjusted for depth of cut. However, I could seem to find no middle ground. I was either cutting deep strips but taking all of the skin or skimming the surface and leaving half of the peel. The peeler also got clogged with peel/flesh very easily and I had to clean it multiple times on each fruit. (I was using fresh firm apples and softer than normal potatoes but the peeler seemed to have less trouble with the softer potatoes.) The instructions indicate that if you are leaving sections of the peel you can guide the peeler by hand while you crank but since I was holding the base with one hand and turning the crank with another I couldn't test this out.
The corer/slicer worked well but like all corers, if you don't put the fruit in straight it will not take the whole core. When used in conjunction with the peeler things did not work as well. As soon as the apple/potato hit the coring attachment the peeler stopped peeling at all even though it was not clogged. Also at one point the spikes holding the apple in place actually cut themselves a circle so they were free spinning. I could turn the crank all day with no progress.
After my experiments I thoroughly washed and dried the equipment and left it on the counter. The next morning the crank shaft was already rusted.
This caused more trouble and took more time than hand peeling. At this point I don't know if I should try another model or skip it all together.
