Customer Review: Very Good Product, Not-so-Good Packaging
Summary: 4 Stars
This Silicone Cooking Ring stood up well during the:
+ initial washing and inspection (it'd be hard to mess such a simple product up, and other companies have managed it, but this maker didn't)
+ microwave disinfection (the metal part can be detached from the two silicon parts)
+ first few tests on a very high heat (using consumer-grade eggs, spray cooking oil)
+ vigorous soapy washing with a soft sponge
Pros:
Both functionality and safety appear to be excellent: where rigid metal cooking rings/forms may perform well on a perfectly smooth cooking surface, several of our HQ kitchen staff's favorite cooking pans have either deformed over years of expert use on high temperature burners, or have developed variable topologies from intentional "seasoning", making these silicone rings ideal. The industrial design very adequately isolates the Chef's hand from high-temperature surfaces using a silicone fingerpad at the end of a rigid but minimalist-diameter metal bar (which also acs as a heat sink). Food residue adhesion is no less an issue here than with metal rings we tested, but even a single sprayed application of a modest, nutritionally-neutral release agent (e.g. a 'schpritz' of olive oil) seems to reduce the amount of egg residue to a level easily removed by manual washing. As a synthetic material for this purpose, Silicone seems to be ideal: it is flexible, due to the alternating silicon-and-oxygen atomic structure and highly resistant to temperature changes. We also appreciated the ability to disassemble the three parts in order to sterilize the unit before the first use: while not something a normal user would do after each use, we consider it a plus if we can take such laboratory environment procedures even just *once* to guarantee ourselves that the product is hygienic.
Con:
The product arrived in a completely compromised consumer package: the paper base was fully detached from the vacuum-formed clear plastic seal and the rings were floating freely *inside* the Amazon packaging. The glue on the packaging was either too old to remain viable, or, more likely the package was pre-opened (by Someone in a warehouse in Somewhere). Although we took the extra precaution of sterilizing the primary silicone rings, etc, customers should be made aware of a possible breakdown in the hygiene envelope via Amazon's boxing facility.
Suggestions:
1. Fix the packaging.
2. Silicone rings such as these that had been formed in the mold around a more rigid, weightier core material would confer additional "heft" and conform better to uneven surfaces in both consumer and commercial applications. A "softer" grade of silicone that still has a <500°F rating (with slightly more oxygen atoms) would improve the product's surface-conformance. To maintain the product's microwave-ability, a weighted core would have to be a non-metallic ballast material such as an inexpensive internal sterile sand extrusion.
