Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 370 Bread Slicerand Guide with Crumb CatcherCustomer Review: looks good - but is useless Summary: 1 Stars
Bascially this looks like it will do the job, but no it won't without great difficulty and very little precision. The end piece constantly falls out, the sides with slits are flimsy and the bread won't stay in place. Effectivley you need to somehow hold the end of the bread whilst holding the sides tight from the top which ensures the end won't fall out and even then if you manage to master this handspan(thank goodness for all those piano lessons) you are still going to get less than perfect slices. If anything I furious with myself for throwing away the packaging prior to testing, otherwise I would have sent it back. The bread slicer is now gone to the same place as the packaging.
In short: If you have any relatives you'd like to torture or just drive completely bonkers this is the perfect gift. Otherwise do not waste your money, your sanity or your beautiful home-made bread on this item.
Customer Review: Not As Useful As It Looks Summary: 3 Stars
I am a bread baker and thought this item may be a good way to cut my bread slices straighter. Found out one size does not fit all. My bread loaves are smaller than this item and the sides of the slicer are not adjustable. if you could slide the sides of this in to fit the width of the bread loaves it be a great idea, but trying to stabilize your bread from slipping defeats the purpose of this cutter.
Don't like this item and I won't use it. It is easier to just cut my bread on a bread board without a bread slicer guide. Just one of those things to buy for the person who has everything and needs nothing. My daughter said she saw one at the Salvation Army store for $2.00. Oh well, I guess that is where mine will end up. It may be nice for people but doesn't work for me. I'll just keep slicing my own bread the way I always have. I'll find someone go give it to or something else to use it for.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money Summary: 1 Stars
I was enticed to buy this (when buying a bread knife) by its low price.
However, even that cost was too high.
It doesn't work very well, is flimsy (after about 10 uses I have numerous broken guides), and uses a great deal of storage space between attempted uses.
I don't think I've ever seen a loaf of bread that is as wide as this device and those from my breadmaker (Breadman) leave 1-2 inches free on either side. On the other hand, it's too short to slice the (already short) loaves from end to end. Because of this, I must hold the loaf by hand anyway and focus on keeping the knife from contacting the super-fragile guides.
The only reason this device is not in the trash is so I can use it enough times to be thoroughly aggravated. Then the cost of it will be worth the relief I feel as I drop it into the bin. That day is a few loaves away.
Customer Review: Decent/Good Bread Slicer ....over priced though Summary: 4 Stars
I PURCHASED THIS FOR MY BREAD-MACHINE BREAD. THE LOAF FITS EASILY INSIDE THIS SLICER AND THE CRUMB CATCHER IS GREAT, BUT THAT IS ABOUT ALL I CAN SAY POSITIVE ABOUT THIS ITEM. THE BLADE GUARDS ARE NOT STURDY AND ARE TOO CLOSE TOGETHER(SLICES ARE TOO THIN). THE BACK PIECE OF PLASTIC FALLS OUT OFTEN. THE PINE WOOD IS NOT FINISHED AND NOT SANDED SMOOTH, JUST RAW WOOD. I HAVE EVEN GOT A SPLINTER OF WOOD STUCK INSIDE THE PALM OF MY HAND. IT ARRIVED IN A BOX, NOT ASSEMBLED (VERY CHEAP LOOKING...LIKE AN ITEM FROM THE DOLLAR STORE OR A BARGAIN BARN). HAD I FIRST SAW THIS PRODUCT AT A STORE I WOULD HAVE PASSED IT BUY! IT IS NOT WORTH $16...THIS IS MORE LIKE A $5 PRODUCT. A KNIFE WITH A BLADE OF AT LEAST 1O" IS NEEDED TO SLICE BREAD.
WITH ALL THE NEGATIVES SAID I MUST ADMIT I USE IT DAILY. IT DOES MAKE NICELY SLICED BREAD AND I HAVE NOT FOUND A BETTER ONE AS OF WRITING THIS.
Customer Review: Works great with frequent use Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this gizmo for about 4 or 5 months. It is great and easy to use. I use it at least two or three times a week since I bake all my own bread. I've used it to slice biscotti, french bread, italian bread, soft white bread, and anything else I have on hand. Sometimes, however, I bake too "fat" a loaf to fit in the slicer, especially a round "boule" loaf of over 1.5 pounds. I get around the problem by cutting the loaf in half and then slicing each half. Not as pretty, but it is a good work around.
Even my wife (normally a knife klutz) can get nice slices with no problems. The price is also reasonable.
The only sad thing is that since the crumb catcher is made of wood, sooner or later, I'll wear it out. Then I'll have to buy a new one. If you need even slices of bread (or want them) get this. It works fine for frequent use.
