Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 370 Bread Slicerand Guide with Crumb CatcherCustomer Review: Uneven slices don't look so bad after wasting money onvthis Summary: 2 Stars
I was very, very iffy about buying this product after reading the reviews, but it was 1/2 the price of the next least expensive one I could find that I liked, plus I bought it during a 4-for-3 kitchen promotion, so I thought why not.
I bough it to try and save money and eat better. I was making all of our bread except bread for sandwiches because I just couldn't slice my bread straight enough. I was paying a ton of money to buy bread that didn't have high fructose corn syrup in it. I figured if this worked, I could save money by making all of our own bread.
I have this bread maker Sunbeam 5891 2-Pound Programmable Breadmakerand the 2 pound loaf wiggles around from side to side as you slice, but is so tall it is above the guides.
It needs rubber on the bottom to keep it from sliding as you slice. I have a extra long bread knife but it still easily finds it's way out of the guides. None of the guides have broken off yet, but I am super careful with it after reading the reviews.
It's very pretty, but it's not very well designed. Pay twice the price if you have to, it's better than wasting your money on this.
Customer Review: Great slicer for the price Summary: 4 Stars
Yes, it's a little flimsy, but on the whole it's been working great for us, after several months of daily use. With the benefit of the other reviews (thanks!), I knew to order the longer bread knife, and despite its shaky appearance it has been holding up very well. I love the removable crumb catcher! And for us, the slices are even and the size is fine. We purchased this to replace an old plastic model on uneven raised legs and are much happier with this design. Although it's rather long, the low profile actually makes it easier to use and less of a storage problem than our previous slicer. I'd call it a good buy.
Update, about a year later: The enthusiastic slicer in our family has managed to knock off one of the plastic strips, but that's easy enough to work around so doesn't create a problem. Most of the wood strips have become detached though, so something needs to be done. My handy husband wants to reattach them with tiny nails, but my solution is just to buy another one. Well over a year's worth of solid performance doesn't seem unreasonable for $15, so although we'd be happier if it were more durable, we like the way it works otherwise and I don't see any better options so am about to just order one more.
Customer Review: This just might be the best thing since sliced bread (for the price) Summary: 4 Stars
I almost didn't buy this based upon some of the reviews. But even though I've never returned anything to Amazon, I could tell from my extensive experience with them that returning an item would be no problem. So I bought it and couldn't be happier. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the soft wood in the crumb catcher which just might become a problem after extended use. Fortunately I have ample woodworking experience to easily replace it with harder wood if need be. I happen to like the thickness of the slices, but it makes only one thickness. I tried both my slicing knife and an electric knife. Both work, but I prefer the electric. The guide works as represented and I'd recommend it to anyone for home use.
UPDATE: MAY 9, 2008
I'VE NOW BEEN USING THIS PRODUCT FOR 6 MONTHS AND IT'S NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS I ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. THE VERTICAL DIVIDERS ON EACH SIDE KEEP SNAPPING OFF. I'VE TRIED EPOXY AND IT WORKS FOR JUST A SHORT TIME. I DON'T USE THE GUIDE A LOT AND IT JUST HASN'T STOOD UP. SEEMS AS THOUGH IT'S A GOOD DESIGN, BUT TOO FLIMSY. AFRAID I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT NOW. DON'T KNOW THAT I'D EVEN GIVE IT ONE STAR NOW.
Customer Review: Big disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
I have to start with an explanation that an 8" bread knife has only 7 1/4" of a blade exposed, the other 3/4" is inside the handle and is not useful. With the 6 3/4" spacing between the acrylic guides on this slicer you have only half an inch of the knife left on the other side when the knife is pushed all the way in. The spacing is just too wide for a regular knife and it slips out of the acrylic guide on the opposite side each time I move the knife in order to slice the bread. In order to get back into the slit I have to guide the knife with my other hand which is, of course, rediculous and even dangerous. Because of this, even if I used my left hand to guide the knife into the slit, the slices come out very ugly. Second, the bottom of this slicer is made of soft unfinished (you can't wash it) wood and after 3 slices (that's all I could handle) the wood got deep cuts and splinters. Third, the back panel of this slicer on the Amazon picture has a word "Bread" written in a handsom writing. On my slicer it said in thick block ugly letters: "Our daily bread". That's it, I learned my lesson, back it goes.
Customer Review: good idea--still needs work Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered this along with a breadmaker as a gift for my husband. I've baked bread from scratch for years and have always realized (a) how challenging it can be to cut neat slices from homemade bread, and (b) how many crumbs appear when you slice homemade bread.
As other reviews have noted, the width of this tray does require you to use a VERY long knife. I have exactly one knife long enough, which is surprising, given the number of knives I've accumulated over the years. Similarly, I agree with those who have noted that the plastic guides on the side are considerably higher than you'd ever need.
Within two days of using this bread slicer, one of the acrylic guideposts on the side had been broken off -- the guideposts are just too rigid to withstand a misalignment of the knife when slicing.
I do, however, think that the whole crumb catching tray is a very good idea. Even if we end up removing the guideposts, the tray would still be very useful. But I think the concept of the guideposts needs considerably more work.
