Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 1 Gallon Stainless Steel Compost KeeperCustomer Review: Keeps the smell down. Works Great. Holds a lot. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the only compost pail I've ever used... replacing my method of just keeping scraps in a bowl. This "keeper" keeps the smell down pretty well, but does start to smell slightly after a few days. However, you have to be right next to it, and we (family of only 2) empty it every few days or so... so it's almost never an issue. The filters do need to be washed every now and then, and even though we bought replacement filters at the same time, we haven't needed to use them yet (we've used it for a few months now). It's not that easy to clean... but then, no "stainless" steel item is. It's not that it's particularly difficult, but it does need a good internal and external cleaning every month or so. Overall, a great product.
Customer Review: Only way to go for home composters Summary: 5 Stars
We have been using the Norpro compost keeper for several years now and it is really the way to go if you like to keep a compost heap from kitchen scraps for gardening. It is durable, easy to clean and use, keeps the odors down and looks fairly attractive on the counter by the sink in the kitchen. After a while we stopped using the filters that fit into the lid. I was washing them out every so often, but the compost keeper works well enough without them and I don't notice any odor if the pail is kept cleaned and emptied regularly. Composting keeps down the amount of trash we take to the dump. The only complaint I have is that I wish it were a little larger, we seem to fill it up every few days. I would buy this product again.
Customer Review: It Works! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this to replace my empty coffee can.
It works.
My only grip is the bottom is slightly bowled out so it wobbles. It's very slight and noticeable only when setting the unit back down. It's also expensive when thinking about its function. Coffee cans were performing the same function before, and almost as well.
Overall it does what is should. It's sizable, reducing number of emptying trips; has a good lid and filter, making it stink and fruit fly free; has a free swinging handle that clears the lid making it easy and comfortable to carry; and it's durable so I don't have to worry about dropping it or handling it with extra care (I mean come on, it's compost).
Customer Review: Just what I needed! Summary: 5 Stars
Although this appears to be nothing more than an expensive stainless steel bucket, it is perfect for my kitchen scrap storage. The filter really does keep the odor from my kitchen. I find it can hold about a week's worth of scraps (unless I get crazy cooking). The wide mouth allows me to put the vegie peels or coffee grounds in without touching anything inside or spilling it all over the counter. It's easy to empty, and easy to clean. It looks nice on my countertop, unlike the plastic pail I had previously. I have had this for about 6 weeks now, and the filter appears to be working just fine. I will have to find out about replacements.
Customer Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
The fruit flies and smell of the previous compost bucket were causing my roommates to rebel against our continuing to compost at all. I bought this little pail, and the problems are solved. NO fruit flies (yay!) and there are times when we've had stuff in there for weeks that we'd forgotten about, brewing a truly nasty moldy mess, but still no smell (until we open the pail, of course). We've had it several months now and have not felt a need to change the filter yet; it still seems to be working fine. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the self-discipline to take out composting scraps every day.
