Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 1 Gallon Stainless Steel Compost Keeper

Customer Review: groovy, but FRUSTRATING
Summary: 3 Stars

I loved everything about this compost crock EXCEPT that the lid fit too tightly. Unless it is about half full, the crock has to be held down with one hand while the lid is removed with the other. Annoying, because me, I always have a handful of scraps, leaving me only one hand free for lid removal. Everyone in my family has a crock (various brands) and mine is the only one that fits so tightly. It really feels like a flaw, and not just a design characteristic.

I sent my original lid back; they sent another. It was even bigger. Then after I measured my crock, first they said it wasn't theirs because it was 6 3/4" and theirs are all 7". Well, the "NORPRO" engraved on the bottom of it backed up my position, so they sent a new crock.

Then the weld on the lid they'd sent broke so the center of it rattled up and down. They sent another, but guess what?? IT WAS TOO TIGHT-FITTING. Again.

I've spent enough in postage back and forth at this point that I'm going to just buy a different brand.

I hope my experience is a lone one, but just wanted to caution others.

Customer Review: Overpriced, but pretty great
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the second year I've been composting and since I'm sticking with it I decided to splurge on this. I definately think it is overpriced..it's a pretty simple product, so the price isn't justified in my opininon...that being said, I still gave it 4 stars because it's a great product!

Before getting this, I was just using old plastic containers. Don't get me wrong, they work perfectly...but they get kinda gross after a while and don't hold nearly as much as the real one. You don't have to make trips outside as often because the Norpro holds a lot and keeps the smell inside. Even when I open it to add stuff..no horrible smell (even though I can clearly see the decomp/mold action going on inside).

Because I haven't emptied it yet, I don't know what the clean up process will be like...but based on reviews, it doesn't seem like it will be that bad.

If you are serious about composting, I say splurge and get this..it makes it easier : )

Customer Review: Great Choice
Summary: 5 Stars

This compost bucket for the kitchen is great. I have not had an issue with bugs (unlike my outdoor composter). The filter only needs to be changed every six months so it is not a big life long expense. In my opinion you really don't need to use the little biodegradable bags. The directions say to line it with a paper towel or newspaper. I did that the first few times. Now I just throw stuff in. After I empty it, I give it a rinse (which I did when I was lining it with paper anyway) and it is fine.

Another reviewer made the comment about her ceramic composter breaking. I would definitely say that is likely. When I am emptying mine I have to set it down outside on a stone path to stir my compost bin. I can see just one time of setting it down too hard and it breaking. Go with the stainless. Will last a lifetime!

Customer Review: Not stainless steel - Don't waste your money
Summary: 1 Stars

We paid the premium price for this product because it is supposed to be made of stainless steel. However, the speed with which this thin metal bucket begins to rust would seem to indicate that it is NOT made of stainless steel, or it is made from the cheapest grade of stainless steel possible.
We really liked the idea of the filter in the lid, and it did look nice on the counter (for a while). Was definitely an upgrade from the cheap, plastic eyesore of a pail we had before.
HOWEVER, when you pay nearly $40.00 for a product because it is supposed to be made of stainless steel, you should expect it to last like a good piece of silverware. This does not.
Buy something cheaper, you are wasting your money on this one.

Customer Review: Love it - great product
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this composter keeper for a few months and absolutely love it. My wife and daughters laughed at me at first - but after about a month they are doing a decent job of throwing scraps into the bin. I think the quality and look helps sell them on using it. But being able to keep it easily hidden and reached under the sink helps too.

The filter works great - have never smelled anything - even after a week. Though I rarely leave stuff for more than a few days - as taking it out to the compost bin every few days is a ritual with my youngest daughter.

This product is well made and is easy to clean - I just rinse it our in the garden and leave in the sun for a few minutes to dry before returing it to the kitchen.
