Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper, WhiteCustomer Review: Not Good Enough Summary: 2 Stars
Like other reviewers, the handles slipped a lot and were hard to place back on the nub. A bigger problem was that this composter (we bought this one to replace a stainless one we had for a year and had to get rid of b/c my husband threw it, dented it, and then the lid didn't fit) attracted an absurd amount of fruitflies -- aprob we did not experience with the other, I think b/c the ceramic pot does not have a very good lid fit. No matter how often we changed the filter, fruitflies took over...in a matter of days. Depending on the day/menu, the pot would sit for a day or two under the sink or on the counter (it is pretty enough to leave out) and this became a problem. Easy fix: take it our more often, I know, but life gets in the way sometimes. The composter had a hairline crack going from the bottom to the top after the first month and shattered the second month when I was cleaning it. It now resides in the bottom of some of my potted plants. I need to buy a new one and might go for the ugly green one instead.
Customer Review: Common Sense Solution Summary: 4 Stars
I decided on ceramic over stainless based on maintaining my stainless appliances in a hard water area - they spot terribly and I just didn't want to have to deal with that.
I like this compost keeper. I think it's just the right size to put a few days worth of scraps in, the filter in the lid is a nice touch.
I have experienced the handle coming off one time - it slips right back on easily. Personally I like it because I can take the handle off to put the entire bucket into the dishwasher. Mine has all manner of veggie and fruit scraps as well as coffee grounds, but I have had little staining. After emptying it, I either gently handwash or run it through the dishwasher about once a week. So far, it has handled really well.
If you just use some common sense and treat it like a dish instead of like a pail, I think you'll be satisfied with this item. Plus it looks so much better on the counter than the old milk carton I was using. LOL!
Customer Review: Packed in styrofoam Summary: 3 Stars
First, I should admit that I bought this from an actual brick and mortar store, not from amazon. But my complaint is about the packaging from the manufacturer, so I assume it would apply regardless.
While the outer box is cardboard, inside the box, the compost container is packed in styrofoam. Oh, the irony. There is no reason that either cardboard, or corn-starch based foam peanuts, could not have been used.
As far as the container itself goes, we bought it to replace a somewhat ugly (and hard to keep clean) tiny plastic wastebasket that we had previously been using (which came directly from the store with no packaging whatsoever). This is clearly much more attractive, although a bit smaller in all dimensions. I would like it to be slightly larger.
Too early yet to tell about its durability, which others have complained about. But my first impressions are that it seems fine to me.
Customer Review: A hard-working beauty! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this crock for about ten years, and am buying a new one only because I've chipped the rim deeply enough that some odors are escaping. It is beautiful on the counter - big, but coordinates with white ceramic canisters. Holds a LOT of stuff, and because it's so sturdy you can keep crunching stuff down as you add more. We've forgotten to empty it before a two-week summer vacation and found lots of new life inside but NO odors escaped! Handle makes it easy to carry, but was sometimes hard to dump out really impacted contents until we hit on the idea of simply putting a small paper towel in the bottom. It's pretty heavy to carry out when full, but that's the only real downside ... other than the fact that we finally found out, as sturdy as it is, it's ceramic and so not indestructible - though it took a LOT of bumps before chipping.
Customer Review: Stainless steel would be better Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this thinking it would look better than stainless steel. We love to compost and this pail sure beats keeping a bucket on the counter. However, it is heavy and the handle is poorly made. When you life up the handle it comes off of the clunky clips on the side. This really needs to be redesigned.
We removed the poor handle after the first trip to the compost. The ceramic is not only heavy, but it is also much harder to keep clean that the stainless steel. The ceramic tends to pick up stains which are hard to scrub out. And of course there is always the fear of breaking it.
As long as the filter is kept clean and fresh, the pail emits no odors. Whether you choose stainless steel or ceramic, make sure you buy some extra filters. You'll be happy you did.
