Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 65004 11-Inch Microwave Plate CoverCustomer Review: Buying another Summary: 4 Stars
I'm buying my fourth Nordic Ware microwave plate cover in the last 8 years. I like the way this cover fits over plates and containers, and we use it all the time. It's large enough and tall enough to cover most dishes. It's easy to clean, either by hand or in the dishwasher, and it keeps our microwave really clean. It doesn't have a greasy feel to it like some plasticware after use.
I like that it is rigid, and doesn't get hot. It is nearly transparent so I can see the food through it. It looks OK so I can keep it right on top of the microwave and don't have to hide it away in a cupboard.
I'm buying a replacement because the previous one has been cracked for so long that it's become floppy. Every one of these which I've owned has cracked within the first year, from the center hole out to the edge. However, this does not impair its effectiveness, and it doesn't fall apart. I had no expectations that this thing would last forever, and I just look at it as a disposable item. It works well enough and I haven't found any that work better, so I keep coming back.
I would caution cooks to keep it clean, as I once had a Nordic Ware cover apparently accumulate some food in a crack, strawberry sauce I think, and the cover started burning in the microwave. There was a nice long melted area from the center to the edge following a crack. And some pretty excited folks running around the kitchen.
Overall, does its job well, it's inexpensive, but I wish they would improve the materials.
Customer Review: Pure perfection Summary: 5 Stars
Living on a budget, I found myself cringing everytime I had to use two or more sheets of papertowels or a long strip of wax paper to prevent food splatter when reheating. I know it seems a bit miserly, but pennies add up...especially in today's economy. What I wanted was something I could reuse. I originally thought about getting a flexible plastic sheet but those seemed difficult to clean, so when I saw the positive reviews (especially those detailing the easy/minimal mess) on this cover, I went for it. I'm so glad I did. Another fave purchase added to the list. The cover is large, but it fits over all of my plates and is even tall enough for my soup bowls. For storage, I simply keep it inside the microwave at all times. And what the previous poster said about the design actually keeping the splatter to a minimum is absolutely true. The other night, I microwaved a large plate (2 servings) of chicken parmesan for four minutes on high power. The food was very hot when I was done. The cheese was nicely melted but not dried out. But the most amazing part was that I never heard the tell-tale pops and explosions that usually accompany heating meats or tomato based sauces for long periods of time. In fact, other than a bit of condensation from the steam, the Nordic Ware cover was spotless. Not a tomato splat in sight. Quick wipe with a soapy rag, a quick rinse, and I was done with cleanup. Fantastic!
Customer Review: Perfect, better than expected Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the reviews here I expected these covers to be lower, but they are IMO actually quite high and allow more than sufficient space for food on a plate underneath (these are PLATE covers). I realized when I used mine for the first time that the circumference of the bottom rim is just ever-so-slightly smaller than my microwave turntable --- how perfect is that? I have a "GE Profile Spacemaker II PEM31SMSS Stainless Steel Microwave Oven", which is smaller than standard microwaves.
I bought two so that while one is in the dishwasher we still can use the spare. I purchased these because my husband kept trying to re-heat food without any cover at all, unless he saw I was watching. We used to use paper towels until we learned the dangers of the metallic particles in them. So the only alternative until now was plastic wrap, but honestly, I'm not sure plastic wrap is completely safe. Since we've received these covers, my husband reaches for them every time. He's very pleased with how much easier they are to use than the !$%&*@# plastic wrap box he always struggled with before.
Both of mine came with faint scratches --- I'm not sure whether that happened at the Amazon warehouse or whether this is inherent in all of them. But they do the job they are intended to do and clean up well in the dishwasher.
Customer Review: could be better...... Summary: 3 Stars
I have been seeing a few of these at my Brother's place. After using a similar item, i liked how tall it was and how well it fit over and around the plate. After spending several years using paper towels and plastic wrap over Chinese food (to keep the rice moist.). I received this item for Christmas after asking for one on the Christmas list. I was a bit disappointed that there was no handle on top of the cover. The only way to life off is through the hole for moisture escape. I have noticed that water likes to cling to it and thus you are putting a finger on the water inside to lift the cover. Also, it appears the cover is made to fit on top of the plate. (There are tabs on the edge of the lower opening to allow for it to rest on the plate.) It seems sturdy but there doesnt appear to be that much of a lip after that to secure to the sides of the plate edge. This cover is limited in what it can cover. It is not tall enough for my soup mugs to be covered without resting it on top of the edge. It also is only about 2 1/2 inches tall so it seems any high foods such as chicken and ribs will have issues and he food will once again sit on the cover to try to cook.
I can only give it three stars as i wish it was taller, fit fully over my plates, and had a handle to pick the top off instead of just the vent ring.
Customer Review: Pay attention to BPA Chemicals before you buy this product!! Summary: 1 Stars
I have this splatter shield and for a long time I thought I was keeping the microwave clean. Well, what I didn't know until recently was that I was keeping ONLY the microwave clean, not my body, nor the health of my family. This plate cover is made with the hard plastic which, unfortunatelly hasn't been banned from many kitchen-related items, including baby bottles, of all things! There's been lots of articles and research published so far on the exposure to BPA chemicals (Bisphenol-A, the building block of polycarbonate.) I would be very very cautious before buying something that will be in contact with my food. BPA chemicals are easy to spot, it's the one with the recycling number "7" inside the little triangle. *** Whereas I can't protect myself and my kids from all the nasty environmental pollutants (and carcinogens)in the community, at least I can make appropriate choices in what I eat, how I cook my food and what I put in my kitchen. So, I wouldn't buy this product to myself, nor to a friend. I would try to find a plate cover made with safer/softer plastic materials (i.e., numbers 1, 2, 4 or 5 inside the triangle).
