Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 64802 Microwave Egg Cooker

Customer Review: This thing is wonderful!
Summary: 4 Stars

I love boiled eggs and I love egg salad but I've never been able to boil an egg consistently well. It seems like I always undercooked or overcooked. Even when I got it just right, peeling the shell ripped chunks out of the egg white. That problem is now solved. I have a 1300W Panasonic microwave and cooking 4 eggs on high for 9 minutes yielded PERFECT results. I could not be happier. However, there is one flaw in this device that prevents me from giving it 5 stars and that is opening it after it's done cooking. This baby is seriously hot coming out of the microwave so you MUST use oven mitts or something similar to handle it. Trying to open this smooth egg with oven mitts is like trying to trim your nose hair with a weedeater, it can be done but it's not easy and will likely be painful. I'll have to invest in some fairly thick rubber gloves to be able to grip this thing well enough to get it open while it's hot but other than that I really love this little bugger!

Customer Review: sometimes perfect, sometimes eggs explode
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this four times. The first three times, all four eggs were perfect. The fourth time all four eggs had exploded.

I was experimenting with the times to get hardboiled eggs, so first time: 6 minutes, second time: 8 minutes, third and fourth time: 10 minutes. The first and second times I got soft boiled eggs, the third time hard boiled, and, well, we know what happened the fourth time :-)

I would be interested to know what causes the eggs to explode, because if this works right consistently, I plan to never cook eggs on the stove top again, this is so much easier.

Update: I have used this many times since I wrote the review, with a time of 9 1/2 minutes for four eggs, and it now works like a charm. I let the eggs sit after the 9 1/2 minutes for 10-20 minutes before refrigerating them, just because this mimics how I used to deal with stove top boiled eggs. Otherwise they may be just slightly underdone.

Customer Review: Educated Eggdicator!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love hard boiled eggs, and I admit they're not the most difficult food item to prepare. But it's easy to forget--do I bring it to a rolling boil, then put the eggs in? Do I put the eggs in first, then turn off the gas once the water boils? Do I use the pot cover? Do I remember where the cover is?

With this little guy, I just fill the bottom with water, load the eggs into the egg holder, stick the top on, and follow the very easy-to-follow directions. I've read some instances of the cooker "exploding" but I have been fortunate enough to not experience this.

The eggs are always delicious and perfectly hard boiled. My one complaint is that the cooker is HOT even several minutes after the microwave timer goes off. And yet, it's important to remove the eggs within a few minutes because they will continue to cook. The shape makes it somewhat hard to grab. Two potholders and a steady hand are required.

Customer Review: a great little unit, easy to use
Summary: 4 Stars

I use this boiler every single morning and have actually bought several of them. the last one I pitched because the metal part of the top part disconnected from the plastic and I wasn't so sure about re-gluing it and using it in the microwave afterward. it's cheap enough and it was already over a year old so I bought a new one. Other reviewers say they have had eggs blow up but I have never had that happen. I always put cold water to the right line in the bottom, I cook a medium boiled egg to 6:15 minutes and then remove from the microwave with pot holders and put in the bottom of the sink. I can get the top off quickly with bare hands and then run cold water over the whole bottom part and the eggs until they are cool enough to peel and touch. I would recommend it but as the others say, you need to experiment with the times and the strength of your oven.

Customer Review: Egg-cellent cooker for the buck!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this for my 11 year-old daughter who loves to eat hard boiled eggs. As soon as we got it, she took it out of the box (no assembly required), added the eggs and water. Snapped the lid back on and set it in the microwave on high for 8 minutes since we have a 1300W microwave. Once the timer went off she let sit for 2 minutes. Make sure to use an oven mitt to remove the container since it will be VERY hot. She removed the eggs, placed them under cold water for a couple minutes, peeled them and they were perfectly done.

I found this to be a safer method then boiling them since the rapidly boiling water sometimes tends to boil over the pot and you also don't have to worry about using too little water and having it evaporate before the eggs are cooked. It's cute, looks just like an egg and makes a great conversation piece when people see it.
