Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 64802 Microwave Egg Cooker

Customer Review: Use it every day, usually with good results
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been using one of these every day for about a year now for hard-boiled eggs. 8 minutes cook time, plus a minute sit time, very consistent. It's easy to use and clean. I have no problem removing it using my bare hands. I then take off the top, put the eggs under running cold water, and lift the egg tray with the eggs by hand. I then put the eggs back in the bottom, with cold water for a short time to cool.

Everyone says they are easy to peel when done. I find this to be true, also, although I wasn't experienced enough with boiling eggs before getting this to compare.

Some eggs crack, and sometimes leak out, which isn't that big a deal. I think it depends on the eggs. Once I got a dozen eggs that seemed to have problems; one day, with those same eggs, they simply blew up, knocked the top off, and splattered themselves all over the microwave. A couple of other times it did something similar, but not so messy. But normally, it works well and doesn't require any puncturing of the eggs.

It basically heats the water from the bottom by shielding the top with thin aluminum, and the eggs are suspended above the water in a light aluminum tray with holes. So the eggs are steamed, not directly cooked by the microwaves.

Customer Review: Amazingly simple but effective product
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an amazingly simple but effective product. Likewise, I will keep my review simple and hopefully effective. I gave this product 5 stars due to its: effectiveness, consistency, ease of use.

Effectiveness: yes, it cooks eggs the way you like them. I had to experiment a little bit because my microwave is 900 watts. For my microwave, 2 eggs at 4 minutes is for soft. 3 eggs is 5 minutes. For hard boiled, 2 eggs at 6 minutes. Experiment for yourself because microwaves come in different wattages.

Consistency: works every time!

Ease of use: 1) pour water up to the line; 2) put the metal tray in; 3) put your eggs on the tray; 4) close the egg cooker lid; 5) set your microwave for whatever time that gives you the level of cooked eggs you want. Does it get any easier than that?

Oh yeah, walk away from the microwave to take a shower or do whatever you want without the worry of overboiling, and come back to perfectly cooked eggs. (Obviously, if you take too long to come back the eggs may be more cooked than you like because it continues to cook if you leave it it the container.) Washing is even easier: dump out the water and wipe dry the cooking unit.

Summary: 1 Stars

I had a product similar to this, if it wasn't this. It was white, egg-shaped, and had metal on the inside top and a metal insert to hold the eggs, four at a time.

Like one reviewer said, my eggs blew up like a napalm bomb, depending on the time. I see people had much luck with it but I always had an egg pop out of it's shell no matter what I did.

And I could never get the egg timed just right to where it was cooked, not undercooked, or have at least one explode or crack with the contents leaking out.

For those of you who can microwave an egg, it sounds like this product's for you

But if you're like me, I found the electric egg steamer fool-proof. It uses the same concept as the microwave egg cooker, although it takes a little longer. I find it takes the same time as boiling a pot of water.

The difference is that I've forgotten that I was steaming them once and after seven hours, with the water gone, the eggs were only slightly singed and perfectly edible.

Had it been a pot, I would have burned it or caused a fire. So if I want hard-boiled eggs now, I only steam them in an electric egg steamer.

Customer Review: Great Egg Cooker
Summary: 5 Stars

I like to have a hard boiled egg as a snack once in a while, but have a tendency to forget I'm boiling water until I've overcooked the eggs. I bought this because I figured a microwavable egg cooker would save me the time (and fire hazard) of having to remember to watch a boiling pot just for a snack. The Nordic Egg Cooker came with helpful instructions for microwave times, and trying it on two different microwaves the eggs came out right on the first try both times. The eggs aren't boiled so much as they're steamed, but this turned out to be a good thing. I found eggs cooked with this product are easier to peel than hard boiled eggs ever were for me before. As an extra bonus, since all you put in the egg cooker is water and eggs in their shells, there's nothing to clean.

The cooker's egg-like oval shape make it a little awkward to store and handle when it's hot after cooking. The cooker's shape seems like it was chosen for style over functionality. I wish they'd made it a cube. Still, these are minor nuisances. The Nordic Egg Cooker is cheap, quick, safer (if you're as absent-minded as me), and makes eggs that peel easier than they ever did before. I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: yes, it works!
Summary: 5 Stars

My only complaint is that it only hold 4 eggs. I used to have the kind you plugged in and I thought that was great but this one is even better. It does take a little trial and error to find the best time for your microwave. But once you know exactly how long works best for you it is a snap to use. I still wouldn't recommend kids using it because it does get very hot and the boiling water inside could easily spill on them as well as they could be burned by the steam when opening it. It is so easy to use otherwise. you just fill the bottom with water, put the metal egg holder in, put upto 4 eggs in it and put the top on. I think I cook mine for about 8 mins. Then you open it up, put the eggs in cool water, and dump out the boiling water. They taste great. I have had some that seemed to get a little scorched and I'm not quite sure why. But normally they are great. Also makes a great gift. I gave one to a friend at work that does that diet with eggs and bacon every morning. She used to forget about the eggs on the stove every morning and I was scarred she would burn the building down. Now she uses this and loves it... and I feel safe :)!
