Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 CupCustomer Review: just fine Summary: 4 Stars
I like this product and would buy again. I can only give it a four star because it does leave some unpopped kernels, and it burns rather easily, but over all it works just fine. I use between 1/4 and 1/3 cup of corn, and it cooks in about 2 minutes 20 seconds in my microwave. If you use too much, or too little, it doesn't pop as well, and tends to burn, but just over 1/4 C. overflowing is about right. After using it about a week, I stopped burning the kernels. It just takes a little practice. Just don't leave it in too long, and expect some unpopped kernels. A recent study showed that bagged popcorn may give you a respiratory illness, so this is worth the effort.
I pop without oil and then use the misto oil sprayer (also on Amazon) to spritz it with olive oil (add salt, shake and repeat). My good cholesterol is great thanks to this and other habits (extra virgin olive oil helps to raise your hdl).
Customer Review: Awesome product Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best! I had used an air popper, but it was incredibly noisy and slow and worst of all, the kernels tasted stale. Now, I get near-perfect bowls of popcorn every time, and it tastes so good that I now eat it absolutely plain (I use no oil or butter, but it does take a while to get used to having no salt).
As other reviewers have noted, the bowl does get incredibly hot after cooking, and stays that way for quite a while (10-15 minutes). Also, after 6 months using it perhaps 5 times per week, my bowl is beginning to show some discoloration. However, these nits are so worth it to get good popcorn and to avoid the crud that is in the microwave popcorn bags. Also, I see no reason to get a bowl that requires those paper inserts. This bowl works great without them.
As for cooking time, just listen to the popping, and stop when there are 2 or 3 seconds between pops.
Customer Review: This popper is awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
The first shipment was broken (plastic with no packing material + really cold day = broken item) but the company was awesome about taking care of it. (One of the best customer service departments I've ever dealt with, in fact!) Once I got the unbroken popper, I tried it out right away, and have been using it several times a week since! I do plan on using my Whirley Pop still, but I like this popper because you don't have to use any oil with it. I just throw about 1/3 C of popcorn in it and it pops most of the kernels in about 3 and a half minutes in my microwave. (As other reviewers have noted, you have to pay attention to find the optimal time in your microwave, or the popcorn will burn.) Then I add butter and/or salt or sometimes just eat it plain, for a healthier snack. Also, given my good experience with the company, I would definitely order from them again.
Customer Review: Beware...all seem to have cracks!! Summary: 1 Stars
Every bowl I've looked at has a crack on the lip of the bowl. I looked at the popper at three Target stores and all had cracks. I even had one shipped to me from the manufacturer and it had several cracks too. The customer service person was nasty. Her response was, "Well, I looked at it before we sent it, but I didn't take a magnifying glass to it", "I guess we can't make you happy so you can send it back" (at my cost of course). Can't make me happy?? Well when I purchase something new, I expect it to be in new condition and not broken upon receipt. The crack is very easy to see and thought they might be interested in the problem. Guess not! I would stay away from this product. There has to be a better option. I may try the Presto, but I've seen this damages Panasonic microwaves. It makes one wonder if anyone can produce a quality product anymore.
Customer Review: Great and Simple Microwave Popper! Summary: 5 Stars
I like to make popcorn almost every night as a light snack. I was using an air popper but decided to look into microwave poppers. I ordered this one because of its simplicity, good reviews, and a reviewer of the Presto Popper recommended this one.
This was over 3 years ago!
I'd like to report after hundreds of bowls of popcorn it is still going strong!
I use the popcorn setting of my microwave and 1/3 cup of Redenbacher popping corn and just walk away. Virtually all kernels pop and never burn. If I use 1/4 cup of popcorn I monitor the popping and stop it when I count 1 pop per 5 seconds.
I never use oil so I just wipe it out after each use.
Caution: As others have noted, the bowl does get hot but a potholder solves that issue. I would not recommend letting small children use it.
