Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 Cup

Customer Review: Makes great popcorn with some drawbacks.
Summary: 4 Stars

Previous experience told me that these eventually wear out, so I bought four. They also make great salad bowls. To get a full bowl of popcorn I use 4 ounces of OR popcorn with 1.5 oz of Safflower oil (very healthy oil - it lowered my cholesterol). Note that only about 2.5 oz of the popcorn will actually pop, which is a drawback, but the taste is almost as good as movie theater popcorn and much better than the microwave bags which by comparison to this come out too dry. It is also healthier. My biggest problem with these bowls is that they stain and eventually crack. The oil will turn them from white to yellow. (Maybe I should try popping without oil?) The surface becomes a little pitted and it feels like there are tiny bits of food stuff embeded in the plastic. (The violent popping might cause this.) Eventually I had to resort to harsh chemicals to clean mine. If you pop as frequently as I do, then I think that 4 bowls might last 3 to 4 years.

Customer Review: Perfect microwave popper for me
Summary: 5 Stars

Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 Cup
After being disappointed by trying another popper, I decided to try this one. My search is over! It doesn't require pads or other disposable junk. In my microwave, it takes about the same time as a bag of microwave popcorn. You can choose whether to use it with oil or not.

My first run was without oil. I was left with around 25 unpopped kernels out of 1/3 cup of yellow popcorn. No waste there, my parrot loves the unpopped ones!

Note that for me, 1/3 cup of yellow popcorn filled the bowl. I don't think I can do 1/2 cup of yellow popcorn. I will try black popcorn next. I highly recommend the Nordic Ware Microwave Popcorn Popper.

Update: Black popcorn worked well also. I think I could have done 1/2 cup of it since they are smaller than yellow.

Customer Review: Never failed me accept when I dropped it
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had two of these, my peeps - but the only reason I had to replace the first one was because I dropped it from a very high place. I had some donut holes hiding in a cabinet above the fridge - I make my more indulgent snacks harder to reach so I don't dip into them as often! - and in the process of retrieving them, I knocked the popcorn popper off the fridge. CRACK! I had to replace it, and I did so in a hurry because there isn't anything indulgent about the popcorn produced by this unit.

See, you put plain kernals in it and that's it - totally healthy. No oil or chemicals. The heat from the microwave pops the kernals. What you do with the popped corn is up to you. I like to spray it with a little all-natural butter-flavored cooking spray and then give it a good dusting with a sodium-free seasoning.

My friend puts chocolate sauce on it, which I've told her is not only unhealthy but also disgusting.

Customer Review: 75% - 80% popping efficiency in my microwave
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this popper because I wanted to easily cook popcorn without oil / salt. For the most part it does a fairly good job. It's probably 75-80% efficient (meaning that 20-25% of the kernels are left un-popped on the initial batch). This isn't really a big deal though. You just pull the popped stuff out and put the un-popped back in and you get up to 99% efficiency. I did notice a floor model that was cracked. I suppose if you dropped it or continually washed in the dishwasher it could crack. So far mine has not cracked and I just hand wash in the sink.
The trickiest part of this unit is getting your cooking time down. Most microwaves have a popcorn button but I don't trust mine since I do various custom loads of popcorn. There is a small time window that once you cross, your popcorn will start to burn. Just consider the first few loads as experiments and you will eventually get the cook time down to a science.

Customer Review: Works Great!
Summary: 5 Stars

They say that packaged "microwave" popcorn picks up toxic chemicals from the bag then there's the unknown stuff they add to the bags for flavor. As an alternative, I purchased this popper on sale here at Amazon for only $2.85 so I didn't expect much even though the reviews here were mostly positive. It turns out that it works great! 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels yields a full 12 cup bowl of popped corn in minutes! I've been using the popcorn setting on the microwave with excellent results... it has not burned the popcorn even once. It pops with no oil or butter, but you can use oil or butter if you choose to. I prefer to add olive oil, butter or coconut oil for flavor... try popping the kernels first, then drip on some coconut oil, drizzle on some agave nectar, add salt to taste then shake for a most excellent sweet/savory flavor combo... or add olive oil with some chili powder and salt... you can try anything you like!
