Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 CupCustomer Review: Food Allergies? Can't have microwave popcorn anymore? Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite item in my kitchen!.
Recently due to food allergies, I was put on a very strict diet and unable to eat any of my favorite snacks. Even the gluten in microwave popcorn is detrimental to my health.
I searched for a popcorn popper, but didn't want the hassle of the clean up afterwards.
This Nordic Ware 12-Cup Microwave Corn Popper is amazing!. At first I had no idea how it could pop and not explode popcorn all over my microwave, so I was a bit skeptical.
Then I followed the instructions, put in 1/2 cup of popcorn and zapped it. You end up with fluffy, light and airy popcorn every time. Each microwave is different so make sure you listen for the slowing of the pops at the end so you don't burn it.
If you want a lite alternative to butter, spray a little PAM or spray oil on it after the popcorn is done and add salt.
It's wonderful and I am loosing weight, staying healthy and on my new food plan thanks to my new popcorn popper.
Not only do I highly recommend it but I am now buying them as gifts!
Customer Review: NordicWare Microwave Popcorn Popper Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my Nordic popper for maybe 6 months, and I use it almost every evening. I prefer my popcorn dry and with a little salt-substitute and some Mrs. Dash, which is a good thing, since I need to watch my blood pressure. And my husband and I are both on WeightWatchers, with the fat limitations. I was looking at reviews for the Presto Popper, because I thought my Nordic took too long to pop, but then I saw reviews for the Nordic and I realized I needed to try popping without any oil at all in my Nordic. We found that it actually pops more quickly without any oil, not even the spray. So I'm not going to replace it at all, because my husband and I are sitting here eating our second batch of the evening, popped perfectly without oil! And only a few kernels left! He sprays his batch with butter-flavored spray, and we're both happy! Thanks for all the reviews; you not only saved us the cost of a new popper, you helped us to know that, if we used it correctly, Nordic Ware Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 Cupwe had the best one already!
Customer Review: Wow! Summary: 5 Stars
My air popper died awhile back so I was popping corn the "old fashioned" stovetop way. It was not only more difficult but also time consuming. I recalled the major disadvantage (for me) of the air popper - very hot and flying popcorn around the house, so I didn't want to go back to the air popper. I read the Amazon reviews of the various microwave popcorn makers and decided on this one. There was another popper that was interesting but I couldn't see buying and replacing discs every few times I make popcorn (usually daily). Enter the Nordic Ware Microwaver. It works GREAT! Very fast (2.5 minutes for me), I can add olive oil (or not), and seasonings right in the container, and eat out of the same bowl. Pretty clever!
I will say however that if you add ingredients before the corn pops a lot of it will remain in the bowl so I'm going to experiment with some other ways to do this. Overall it is super! Great big fluffy kernels of corn. Oh, and start with the 1/3 cup - I started with 1/2 and the lid almost came off the bowl. OK, this is making me hungry so I best get back to popping! Enjoy!
Customer Review: Recent study from UCLA warns against microwave popcorn bags Summary: 5 Stars
I was buying and eating the bagged microwave popcorn. Cooks fast throw it in a bowl, add a little olive oil--and sometimes when I'm in the mood for something like Kettlecorn--I'll add a half-Tbls of coconut sugar or Agave necter--yumm! HOWEVER, I stopped after I read an article by Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group. Basically, it's not the popcorn itself, but the chemically-saturated lining of the bag including a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) that, according to a recent study from UCLA, may be linked to infertility and other scary conditions. The article explained that microwaving vaporizes the chemicals as they move from coating the bag to lining the popcorn. But it's not like this fact is un-acknowledged. In fact the article points out that DuPont, as well as other manufacturers, have "promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then." But, not by me anymore. I bought this one and it popped almost all of the kernels and each kernel was perfectly fluffy. Highly recommend.
Customer Review: Christmas day popcorn! This works GREAT. Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, this works so much better than advertised. Just amazing, amazingly simple and great popcorn. It's basically a bowl with a lid, the bowl is made with that special high-temp plastic that can take high heat and doesn't deform. Dump in a half cup of popcorn, stick it in the microwave for 4 minutes and there you go, tasty hot popcorn....with (FIRST POINT) only as much butter or oil as you want, not the thick (but admittedly tasty) coating in the store-bought microwave popcorn. For those watching your cholesterol/weight/fat intake (quite the bummer, I know) this is a life-saver. Get those butter-flavored sprinkle toppings from the store and you have a great treat. SECOND POINT: This is much tastier than the old air-popper type popped corn. I think it's because the steam from the popped corn is contained in the bowl and not immediately driven away by a hot stream of air. Plus this popper isn't so amazingly whiny noisy as the air-popper. FINALLY: This will pay for itself in just a few bowls of popcorn. It's about $17 including shipping from Amazon. We will be getting these as gifts for several of the family.
