Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 Cup

Customer Review: May not be so healthy after all
Summary: 3 Stars

At first I thought this popper was the answer. The problem is that after you've used this product nearly every day for a year, it becomes discolored and pretty stinky. And this is despite washing thoroughly by hand after each use. No amount of cleaning helps.

I've used this popper in two different microwaves and it seems the one with lower power actually made better popcorn. With the higher powered microwave I tried experimenting with different power settings but then the power is intermittent (no, microwaves don't really lower the power--a 90% setting means the power cycles on 90% of the time and off 10%) and for corn to pop properly you need a blast of continuous power. I mention this because the rave reviewers may be using older, lower-powered microwaves.

Air popper? They spew unpopped kernels all over the kitchen until the first few pop and block the opening.

Hey, the only reason you're reading these reviews is that you love popcorn, right? So here's a healthy hint. Use olive oil instead of butter. It's so good for you that you need to use a little salt just to counteract it :-)

I give this product three stars because it's good--for a while.

So the search continues.

Customer Review: Pop it yourself!
Summary: 4 Stars

Of course I heard that the pop in the bag microwave popcorn is dangerous to your health. Something about the fumes from the bag when you open it give you lung cancer (or something). So, of course, I've got to find a way around that. Well, I wasn't all that happy about the microwave popcorn anyway since they stopped making the kind with low sodium and no artificial butter.

Let me say that the Nordic Ware is really sturdy. I mean, you could probably use it as a step stool. And you can use it to pop popcorn in the microwave completely without oil! Just a hint here: you do need to try to arrange the popcorn so that it is not in a pile, but sort of lying up the sides as much as possible. There is going to be about a tablespoon of unpopped corn. But, that is also true of the paper bag microwave popcorn. I've been popping Black Jewel-it is incredible! Tasty and crunchy! And totally without oil, without butter, and without salt!

My husband tried to talk me into one of those air blowing poppers. I had one when they first came out (back in the 70's) and it was noisy and got so hot that if you touched the wrong part of it you got seriously burned. All I can say is, the Nordic Ware is far superior!

Customer Review: Do Not Melt Butter on top!
Summary: 1 Stars

Originally rated it a Four-Star, but NordicWare's lack of customer service made it necessary to downgrade the rating. Silly me; I asked them to send me a new lid.

Original comments: I have used a Presto popper in the past with great results. The Presto also allows for simultaneous butter melting on top of the lid, but the popper itself requires periodic replacement of the reflective base inserts.

The Nordic Ware Microwaver Popcorn 12 cup Popper does a great job, but DO NOT be tempted to melt butter on the top side of the lid in the four section reservoir. I did so with my week old unit, and ruined it. The lid cannot handle the temperature of the melted butter, and it then melted as well. NOT GOOD. Had it not been for my prior units capabilities, I probably never would have considered trying this.

FOLLOW UP: I wrote a nice email to NordicWare Customer Service regarding the Melt Down, and included the constructive suggestion to add this warning prominently on the packaging. I triple checked what mine came with, and there was not mention of melting butter. In response I received a one line response-
"the nordicware popper has it's own instructions--no butter on top!!-- "

Customer Review: Good popper but cook for less time, not more.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great popper; you can use it with or without oil and it is very easy to clean. The only thing to watch for is that the instructions say to pop the corn on high for 2 to 4 minutes - definitely start with 2 minutes, and work your way up to 4 minutes IF you need to. I pop 1/3 of a cup at a time, and in my microwave, if I go over 2 minutes the popcorn starts to burn.
Overall, a great popper and you don't have to buy the paper inserts which are needed with some other poppers.

Customer Review: Fits in my tiny microwave and works wonderfully
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Sharp Half-Pint microwave I bought in the early 1980s. It works perfectly well so I have no reason to buy a new oven. But, it is very small.

I love popcorn. The bags are expensive and filled with less-than healthy ingredients so I've wanted to pop my own corn. As have others, I tried air poppers. They are messy and I've been unhappy with the flavour of the corn.

So I've been looking for a microwave popper that would fit in my tiny oven. And I found it.

The Nordic Ware Microwave Popcorn Popper is the perfect size for my oven. The first batch I made, I used 1/3 cup popcorn with no oil and had very few unpopped kernels at the end. The second batch, I used 1/2 cup popcorn with oil and found many more unpopped kernels.

I see an online suggestion to stop when the popping begins to slow down, remove the popped corn and then continue. This will ensure having few unpopped kernels. Think I'll try that.

In the meantime, I am very pleased and have even ordered a second popper just in case something happens to this one or they decided to discontinue it.
