Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nordic Ware 60120 Microwaver Popcorn Popper 12 CupCustomer Review: Excellent popcorn popper Summary: 5 Stars
I was originally looking for an air popper, as the one I used 20 years ago worked so well for perfect buttered popcorn. It's only drawback was how noisy it was. After reading many poor reviews of air poppers, however, I thought I'd give the Nordic Ware popcorn popper a try.
This thing works great. Unlike many reviewers who like popcorn without any oil and little salt, I like my popcorn like the kind I've only been able to get from a couple of older local movie theaters that still use butter instead of oil. (Bagged microwave popcorn uses Diacetyl "Butter Flavor" and hydrogenated vegetable oil, not real butter.)
For my movie-style buttered popcorn, I use 1/4 cup of white popcorn, 1/3 stick of salted butter, and fine-grained Popcorn Salt to taste before popping. When done, each popcorn kernel is lightly infused with butter and salt. Perfect!
It's best not to wait until popping slows to one pop every second or two as you would with a bag of microwave popcorn, or the popcorn will start to burn. (My microwave is 1250 watts.) There are some un-popped kernels, but bulk popcorn is so much less expensive than bagged microwave popcorn that it's nothing to be concerned about. Cleanup is very easy, even when butter is used, and both bowl and lid take the heat without any sign of damage. The Nordic Ware Microwave popcorn popper is as reliable as your microwave oven, and very inexpensive.
Customer Review: My First M-W Popper Summary: 4 Stars
Prior to this product, I was using air poppers. Plural, because after the first one died and I couldn't find a replacement, I bought a different brand. Air poppers are fine, though there are disadvantages for which a microwave popper does not suffer. Because microwave (m-w) poppers are self-contained with a lid, whatever kernels pop, remain in the vessel. And unlike an air popper that can allow popped corn to fly everywhere including kernels that pop after leaving the popper, again, a m-w popper inherently eliminates this phenomenon.
Since this is the first m-w popper I've owned, I can't compare it to any other. I will say that the corn that pops tastes the same as air popped, which is to say that unless it's buttered and salted, it will never approach the taste of theater corn or some of the m-w bags. I cannot indulge for medical reasons.
I gave it 4 stars, because I expected it to leave fewer un-popped kernels. For a 1/3-cup portion, 35-45 kernels consistently remain un-popped. It doesn't matter whether the kernels are fresh. Yes, I had some VERY old corn that popped, surprisingly. I thought that fresh corn would provide better results, but it didn't matter. If all other m-w poppers perform the same, then this product should get the full boat.
I would echo the cautions of some other reviewers regarding how hot the bowl gets. But all you need is a towel or something equivalent to insulate it, and have at it. I think I will.
Customer Review: mixed feelings, like PowerPop better Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this popper NOT to save money, but to avoid throwing all those microwave popcorn bags into the landfill AND so I could season the popcorn the way I wanted, avoiding all those unnatural, weird ingredients that you might find in WALMART microwave popcorn. I wouldn't even try to make cost comparisons because it's the old apples and oranges thing.
I am going to echo some of the comments that other reviewers made, but because they are complaints, I only give 3 stars. I found that popcorn can burn sometimes if the power is too high, and when it is set lower, the popper itself can still get WAY too hot to handle, and it stays hot for quite a while trying to eat. So this necesitates using an other bowl to eat out of. It seems to take a LOT more power to get all the kernels to pop compared to the Presto PowerPop. I also found that the popper plastic tends to discolor over time and I am concerned about the heat doing things to the plastic that may cause it put out small amounts of toxic chemicals. I have other pieces of plastic micro cookware that don't do this.
Some have commented about the PowerPop's paper cups being too expensive. I started with 2 packages of these things and they have lasted OVER 3 years!! This is because I reuse them and do NOT put oils in there when popping; I add it later. So I like the PowerPop a lot better and use it instead.
Customer Review: Why didn't I buy this sooner? Summary: 5 Stars
Since my New Year's resolution was to drastically cut down on my potato chip consumption, I turned to popcorn since it is quite a bit healthier yet gives me salty, crunchiness. I had been buying the 'natural' flavor microwave bags. Not only are they expensive per serving, they are still full of junk. So I got a clue and ordered this popper. I'm so so happy with it. The popcorn it produces is so good and much cheaper than microwave bags. A box (3 bags) of mic popcorn ranges between $2.50 and $3.50, a bag of popcorn kernels is about $1.39 and makes almost 25 servings. I use about 3 tbsp kernels and add just a few drops of olive oil...enough to coat the kernels. Then I add some salt to that mixture. (I stir it around with a spoon to make sure the oil/salt is all evenly distributed. It's worth taking the time to do this step.) Then it only needs about 2 1/2 minutes to be perfectly done. I've also tried cheese topping which was good but my favorite so far is the salt and vinegar I tried...olive oil and salt to coat kernels and then just a few drops of vinegar. BBQ seasoning I had in my pantry was yummy as well. The possibilities are endless!
The description states the bowl is unbreakable, but I dropped mine in the sink and the corner broke off. But it still works just fine.
Customer Review: This makes me so happy! Summary: 5 Stars
First, I love homemade popcorn. Pre-packaged microwave popcorn has always been replusive to me, with the fake butter flavor and the hydrongenated oils that leave a waxy film in my mouth. Gross! Even the "light" and "natural" versions or those without butter flavoring taste odd to me.
I love to pop popcorn on the stovetop with a little canola oil and then sprinkle it with a seasoning product called "Spike". Everyone that tastes the popcorn I prepare this way loves it. Unfortunatly, making popcorn in the microwave is a lot more convinient than on the stovetop.
Recently I began to wonder if there's a healthy and tasty way to make popcorn in the microwave using raw kernals instead of pre-packaged microwave popcorn. That's when I came to Amazon.com and found this product. I read the rave reviews and decided to give it a try myself. This popper is the best thing to happen to popcorn for me since my wife introduced me to the "Spike" seasoning. It does exactly what all the other reviewers say it does. It makes great-tasting, healthy popcorn, with or without oil, in about 3 minutes!
If you want to pop your own popcorn with or without oil in the microwave so you can break free of the disgusting pre-packaged stuff, this is the way to go!
