I purchased this cleaver to open Thai coconuts and it does the job. I had previously gone through several cleavers that have wood handles that are bolted/diveted on the the knife and they just don't stand up to the hacking and pounding I do. This cleaver arrived super sharp inside a plastic bag inside a perfectly sized box. Included in the box were these directions: "ALL PURPOSE - Thank you for purchasing one of the most useful tools in the kitchen. Just a few tips and hints on the use of your cleaver. Do not wash in dishwaser or soak in water. Dry immediately after washing. The sharp edge is, of course, for slicing, dicing, chopping and mincing. The opposite blunt edge for tenderizing, the wide flat side for mashing garlic, ginger and the blunt end of the handle for grinding spices, mashing herbs, etc. Use the wide flat blade to pick up all the chopped food. This cleaver is all purpose and can go through bones, eg chicken, duck, fish, small ribs, etc. Cleaver is very easy to sharpen with a steel or a stone. With just a few swipes, you will attain a very sharp edge again and again. you will enjoy many years of cutting up in the kitchen with this practical cleaver from china."
