Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food DehydratorCustomer Review: happy with the product Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this product to make jerky for my husband since he is on a low-carb diabetic diet and is thus very limited on what he can snack on. We are very pleased with the result. I have made jerky both with the sample of curing spice the unit came with and without it (just using my own marinade concoction) and they both came out great. Sliced very thin, we can do a 3 lb piece of beef in about 4 - 5 hours which makes about a large ziplock bag of jerky. To buy that much pre-made jerky would cost a fortune. The noise level is not bad, like an audible hum. The unit also generates some heat in the room. We use it on a continuous basis. The difficult part is cleaning the dried-on marinade off the trays - best to let them soak in the sink for a while, but we think it's worth it (I make him do it!) I bought a vacuum sealer to vacuum pack the jerky, but he eats it so fast it's not necessary. It comes with an instruction manual on how to dry different types of food. We are very pleased with the purchase.
Customer Review: Great value, works very well! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product about a month ago, and I love it. I originally bought a different dehydrator that arrived to me already damaged from the shipping as it was very cheaply made and not sturdy at all. I returned it to Amazon and I spent a lot more time reading the reviews, and it turns out that this Nesco is one of the highest-rated on the site. It is much sturdier than the cheap crap I bought before, and dries very efficiently. There's a low hum of air, but it's not disruptive.
This is obviously not a product for people who want to do industrial-size batches of drying, but it works very well for me as I love to make my own snacks. I've made fruit leather, zucchini chips, dried bananas and apples, and I'm going to make jerkey this weekend. Drying times vary a lot depending on where you are, so I decided it was unnecessary for me to buy a unit with a timer. In short, great value, although I haven't had it for a very long time yet and will update if it breaks early.
Customer Review: great dehydrator Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this item as a means to deal with the overabundance of produce coming out of my garden!!! I have dried tomatoes, apples, apricots, peppers, and made a ton of venison jerky using this machine. I also purchased the extra "layers" enabling me to be more efficient and do even more drying in the same amount of time. The tomatoes came out EXACTLY like the package of sun-dried tomatoes that you would buy in the store! They were such a hit (and I dried so many) that I even sold them to a local cafe. Everything I have dried has come out amazing. I bought the fruit leather screen and the jerky screen and both came out beautiful. There are two drawbacks to this dehydrator: 1) is that it is pretty noisy and 2) there is no "auto off" feature. The machine stays on as long as it is plugged in, so you do have to come back and check the food every hour or so to make sure everything's going okay. But all in all, it's a great product, I have yet to have a problem with it.
Customer Review: First time user - very, very happy Summary: 5 Stars
I have never dried fruits before so I had no idea which Dehydrator to buy. There are so many on the market and all claim to be the best. So I bought this one and I have to say it was a great choice. The machine comes with 5 trays, 2 clean-a-sheets and 2 fruit-roll trays. This is more than enough to get started. (Make sure to get the extra clean-a-sheets as they are very handy). The machine is very easy to use, no explanation necessary. The trays are sturdy and durable. The fan is very quiet but still powerful enough to dry the foods in a reasonable time. The documentation is basic but good enough. It shows you drying times and has tips & tricks for different foods, recipies included.
I have not used any other Dehydrators, but if you are in the market for your first machine too, this one won't disappoint you!!!!
I ordered it from Amazon, even if it was not the cheapest option. Reason for this is the great Customer Service and prompt & reliable service.
Customer Review: Great dehydrator Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this dehydrator following attempts of drying Hachiya persimmons (record crop of over 550 persimmons on my one small tree!) in an old dehydrator (with no blower) I purchased from a neighbor at a yard sale. This process with the old dehydrator took 2.5 days for each batch, and I had to reposition the trays every 8 hours so the fruit would dry evenly.
Following the purchase of this dehydrator, I found that the process took about 18 hours instead, and required no repositioning of trays. Clean up was a breeze, as the heating unit and blower are in the lid, and no dripping get into the mechanics of the appliance. The dried fruit was a great hit as holiday gifts, and I am excited to try other fruit as they come in season. I would recommend this dehyrator to any small scale food-drier. The only thing I felt it lacked was a timer switch, so it would turn off automatically after a set amount of time. It is a wonderful addition to my kitchen.
