Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food DehydratorCustomer Review: It's okay... huge power drainer though Summary: 3 Stars
Well, I read the reviews and picked this and I'm on the fence with it. I've only tried drying fruits with it so far and it takes a loooooonnnnngggggg time to dry. The first time I used it I combined numerous trays of sliced apples with a few trays of halved pears. Mistake. There was too much moisture in the pears and that affected the apples. Next batch was just apples and it still took WAY longer than I thought it should -- as in 2 full days with the thing going -- for thinly sliced apples! I tried some herbs and ended up throwing the herbs out because they looked questionable. They got wilty instead of crisp and I was concerned with mold getting into the nooks and crannies of the herbs. The dried apples are fantastic and the initial price was great (because I had a rebate through my credit card) but I'm seriously worried about my electricity bill so makes me wonder if it's worth it in the long run. Going to be doing more onions this weekend (red onions) which the first batch, though it took forever too to dry them, were fun to have on-hand -- crispy, tasty dried onions for crumbling over soups... almost like croutons.
Customer Review: one of the best purchases I have ever made! Summary: 5 Stars
While browsing for the Food Processor I THOUGHT I wanted for Christmas, I accidentally ran across this Dehydrator. We are Jerky fans to begin with, I've been Primal for about 4 months now, there was a wealth of garden bounty on it's way, it was VERY reasonably priced and rated very high in ALL appliances. It is everything I hoped for...I have made Jerky, pet treats, dried veggies & fruits, Potpourri & dried flowers for wreaths...can't wait to make my (already) appreciated Cinnamon Ginger-Bread Christmas ornaments, which used to take the entire month of December to dry, turning daily. They should take about 10 hours with this!
For us, it's the perfect size(family of 4 + 1 dog & 1 cat)....Nicely outfitted with 2 mesh screens and 2 fruit roll screens. Have been assured it's safe & sturdy enough to leave on when no one is home, although I haven't quite dared that yet.
And EVERYONE on my list is getting a basket assortment of dehydrated products for Christmas this year, tailored to their lifestyle & interests; will save me a ton, if I consider my (minimal) prep time to be free.

Using the Nesco FD-75PR Food Dehydrator for the first time tonight. About 3 hours into the drying and everything is looking great. I have about 4 lbs of sirloin cut into stips and they are already looking "jerky" like. I don't think this is going to take all night as I feared.
I did rotate the trays at the 2 hour mark but not so much because I had to, but because it's what I'm used to and the top tray did look a smidge drier than the bottom. However, my top tray had the last of the meat on it, so they were smaller pieces too. For those wondering, 4 lbs of steak cut into strips takes 3 trays plus part of the 4th. 5 trays came with the machine and we had ordered another set of 2 because we weren't sure if the first 5 would be enough. I'm thinking 8 lbs of raw meat dehydrating would be a wonderful thing.
The Nesco website is also full of recipes, so for those of us who are still new at food dehydrating, it's a nice jumping off point.
The machine and the trays seem very sturdy. I think this is gonna be good!

Review for: Nesco FD-75PR 700-Watt Food Dehydrator
I've used this almost daily since it arrived a few weeks ago - making family, friends and co-workers very happy. I use ground sirloin (at least 93% fat free) or ground venison and a jerky gun. I highly recommend getting a jerky gun. 2 to 2-1/4 lbs. of meat fills all 5 trays. In the dry winter months we're having, it takes about 5 hours to dehydrate a batch. Very minimal clean up using ground meats. Drying time was the same when I sliced up a tenderloin. This unit does NOT have an automatic on/off timer, nor on/off switch (you just plug and unplug it), but I wasn't looking for a unit with those features. Top is clearly marked as to which heat setting to use, depending on what you're drying.
Fan and motor are on top of unit, so you don't have to worry about anything dripping/falling into the motor and creating a problem.
I purchased it specifically for making jerky or drying jalapeno peppers. Very happy with this product.

I love beef jerky more than anything. I just hate paying the high price to buy it. So I decided to give this do it at home thing a try. I have never seen beef jerky made nor made it myself. I marinated my meat the night I got my dehydrater in the mail and used it the next day. Even though this was my first time making jerky it came out great! First off the instructions for this machine (and literally everywhere else) said it take up to 6-12 hours to make beef jerky. Mine cooked perfectly in 3 hours. That may be because I sliced the meat thin but it came out no thinner than the usual size in a store bought bag. The machine was quiet (It sounded similar to a computer fan), and cooked every piece thoroughly even though I didnt really consider the placement of the meat. Everything came out great and I plan on using this thing alot more in the future. I cant believe it was this easy to make such great beef jerky in such a short amount of time. I'd look no further than this product if your looking at getting a great affordable dehydrater.
