Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Nesco CR-1010-PRR Coffee Bean Roaster, 800 watt

Customer Review: Ok with reservations
Summary: 3 Stars

We are on our fourth Nesco CR-1010 Roaster (three new and one repaired). These are easy roasters to get the desired roast with and the catalytic converter is great for indoors roasting; however, we have had the same problem with the first three and I'm hoping that the problem has been fixed with the last roaster we've purchased. Here's the trouble: After a period of time the motor will slow down and pulse faster and slower as if there was a drag on the auger shaft. I re-staked the bearing in the aluminum bearing holder which worked for a while. The problem came back in short order. I manufactured a fix to hold the bearing securely and I thought I had this problem licked....nope. My conclusion is that the motor just is worn out. The warranty expired on on all three when the motor trouble occurred. We do roast a lot of coffee and we should expect some wear, but our son has had the same model for over four years without any troubles whatsoever. Ours last about one year. Great roaster, but not heavy duty enough rates three stars out of five.

Customer Review: Steer Clear of this one!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this 'lovely' roaster after reading some favorable reviews.
Unfortunately, I should've looked a bit farther and I would not have done so. FWIW.....Be sure to READ the reviews!!!
I've owned this roaster for a very short time (has no warranty) -- and, you guessed it -- it suddenly quit working....mostly.
Actually, I only roasted one batch of coffee.
Now the unit will "cool" but nothing else. Motor runs, auger turns, panel changes digits, it even warms up...but main control board will not change time or go to roast. I'm no electronics engineer, but that indicates a control board malfunction to me!
After calling NESCO (just as others said) -- it is now cheaper to simply toss it away and purchase another brand than to pay for shipping, labor, repair, and parts (estimated at least $120).
Fortunately, I can sell off the parts :)
Steer clear of this one.....unless you purchase a long warranty! NESCO was a quality brand once, but no longer.

Customer Review: DANGEROUS item, and awful customer service. Avoid.
Summary: 1 Stars

I've been roasting coffee for over 10 years, on various devices ranging from the simplest popcorn poppers to dedicated home roasters. I've never had any catch on fire. The Nesco wasn't overloaded, it simply slipped a gear - the auger stopped turning - and so the beans inside started to smolder. Despite catching this quickly, there was oily residue all over the roaster. I returned it to Nesco under warranty, and they "fixed" it, but what I got back was exactly the same machine, still reeking of smoke. When I complained about this, they said "this is all we can do". When it worked, it was OK for lighter roasts. This is a poorly thought-out product from an infomercial-level company, and is a danger. You're much better off using a popcorn popper, or exploring some of the other home machines. (see sweet marias for a comprehensive range)

Customer Review: Fire hazard waiting to happen / lucky if you get a year from it
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had 2 of these coffee bean roasters. The first one lasted for less than a year and it died. It always had some amount of smoke when roasting. The smoke incrementally increased during the time I used it. The second one we got 3 months ago and today the spindle stopped turning and huge amounts of smoke started to billow out from the machine. I yanked the cord away from the power supply but the fire alarm went off! I dont know about you-but I am really tired of poorly made appliances, usually made in China that you have to replace many times. No more Nesco's for me!
I suggest that when you buy this Nesco- pray that you get a year out of it and NEVER, ever leave it out of eye sight for even a nanosecond.

Customer Review: Works well, then breaks
Summary: 1 Stars

This roaster does exactly what it says: it does a great job roasting small batches of beans. But it is CHEAPLY made. The first one I purchased lasted 3 months. It was replaced under warranty, but the second one broke almost exactly a month after the warranty had expired. Removing the bottom of the roaster revealed the problem right away: the pulley wheel that spins the auger had melted. Note, this is a plastic pulley wheel placed directly below the heating element. Does anyone else see a design flaw here? After much banter with Nesco, they have refused to replace it and insist that I have to pay for repairs.

Bottom line: buy this roaster if you want to replace it about once a year.
