Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mug / Coffee Cup Warmer

Customer Review: Top 10 reasons not to buy this thing
Summary: 1 Stars

1. It sort of works, but doesn't keep coffee warm except for that last little bit at the bottom. Perhaps it should include a box of plastic stirring sticks.
2. It wastes electrical power and stays warm to the touch even when supposedly off.
3. Exudes that delightful aroma of overstressed, under-specified electronic components.
4. Causes you waste gasoline taking it to the hazardous waste dump. The switch invariably fails immediately after the warranty is up, at the very latest. I've discarded three so far; only one to go.
5. The cup area is too small for serious coffee mugs.
6. Manufacturer just too lazy to use two different color LEDs (i.e., yellow and red rather than two blue LEDs) to indicate power level as well as indicating whether it's on or off. Yeah, I know, there was probably 1 yuan per 1000 units additional profit in not having to stock two different LED colors, and blue LEDs are "cool".
7. Overpriced vs. the competition.
8. It passed UL? Imagine that! (I don't know if the switch poses a danger when it fails - and it WILL fail.)
9. Makes you look like a real jerk if you give this piece of junk as a gift, even though you paid plenty for it.
10. On the plus side, it hasn't actually caught fire or electrocuted anyone I know.

Customer Review: Better than cold coffee
Summary: 4 Stars

It is best to use a flat bottom or thin/lite coffee/tea mug rather than one that is thick and has a beveled edge bottom, if the bottom is beveled then the surface contact is limited to the edge and cannot heat the cup as well.

The heated surface is pretty hot, I touched it with my finger to test so if your coffee is not hot then its probably due to the bottom of the cup not making full contact. Its as hot or hotter than a coffee pot burner.

I tried just a few cups and my coffee stays just above warm but not hot (I don't have any flat bottom cups). It has 2 settings, high and low - the high setting kept my coffee just above warm.

It has a "new" smell which is kind of strong, maybe it will go away over time - don't know.

One small issue, the bottom of the warmer gets kind of hot so don't put it on top of something that is plastic or sensitive to heat. I set it on top of a book and the book got hot but no damage was done.

In summary though, its better than a cold cup of coffee and the temperature is drinkable.

Customer Review: DO NOT BUY THIS
Summary: 1 Stars

After spending over an hour searching online for the perfect coffee mug warmer, I finally decided that I would let my Secret Santa decide which coffee mug warmer was best. Having only one caveat, I said, "I'll try any coffee mug warmer except for the Brookstone one, because all of the reviews say that it gives off a terrible smell of burnt metal and plastic." -something for which I have no tolerance. I can poison myself without Brookstone's help, thank you very much.

Needless to say (but I will anyway), I'm going to return this -knowing full well that I'll be forced to take store credit, because my Secret Santa made the whereabouts of the receipt a secret, too. Yeh! I would re-gift it, but that would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Bottom line: if you care about your health and/or the health of your coworkers, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Luke warm coffee is not worth having to breath-in (what are likely) carcinogenic fumes.

Customer Review: Wish I'd read the other reviews before buying
Summary: 1 Stars

I really wish I had thought to come here to read the reviews of this piece of crap. I don't know how warm (or not) this thing keeps coffee, because I unplugged it well before I could figure it out. The smell was unbelievably bad and it really smelled to me like formaldehyde outgassing. Which would explain the headache that I woke up with today (meaning it started outgassing before I even had it turned on this morning), as well as that of another reviewer's. I mean, maybe it isn't formaldehyde--Brookstone says that they don't use that chemical--but that's what it smelled like to me.

Moral: Save your money. There's another dual temp mug warmer on Amazon for half the price of the Brookstone and that's what I'm buying to replace this thing.

Customer Review: Brookstone Cup Warmer - Not
Summary: 1 Stars

Got this cup warmer for my bd - first day I used it there was this horrible burned electrical wire smell. At first even thought it was coming from my coffee, but later determined it was from the warmer and the odor was on my ceramic mug and I smelled it every time I took a sip of coffee. The smell was sickening! Also, the table where the warmer was sitting was still warm an hour after I turned it off. Didn't even think to be concerned about the surface getting too hot until read Amazon reviews. So, will certainly be returning this to Brookstone and researching carefully for another one!Brookstone Desktop Mug/Coffee Cup Warmer
