Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Coffee GTF2-1 Basket-Style Gold Tone Permanent FilterCustomer Review: This doesn't filter coffee properly! Summary: 1 Stars
This product will not filter all the grinds out of your coffee. Lest you think I've jumped to this conclusion, I've been using this filter for almost a year! Every cup, every pot no matter how carefully ground and brewed will contain tiny coffee particulate. Aside from cholesterol concerns, the coffee tastes bitter and chalky.
First a bit of background- my wife and I drink a full pot of coffee a day. We're pretty particular- not baristas, just snobby. We've been grinding our own coffee for years and have been using a Bunn coffeemaker- BUNN NHBX-B Contemporary 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer, Black for the last two. We buy nice beans (~$10/lb) from Empire Coffee here in NYC. We use a vacuum carafe (which we love)- Zojirushi Premium Thermal 1.85 liter Carafe, Brushed Stainless Steel to keep it hot.
We purchased this filter because we were tired of buying paper filters, first and foremost. We also figured that we might save a few bucks and also help the environment. 1000 filters direct from Bunn will cost you less than $20 delivered so we didn't break even and the other two issues now seem trivial compared with the grit we get at the bottom of our coffee.
After we realized that this filter wasn't trapping all the grounds, We started trying to make it work. First, we started pouring off the bottom of every pot (and every cup). But the suspended grit still made the coffee unpleasant. Then we switched from our basic grinder- Krups 203-42 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder, Black to a burr grinder- Capresso 560.01 Infinity Burr Grinder, Black and set the grind to very course, but this still didn't correct the problem.
We just got our shipment of Bunn paper filters and the coffee now tastes perfect again (maybe even better because of the burr grinder, which is awesome!). The permanent filter is permanently put away. And I am happy. Don't waste a year on this product like I did.
Customer Review: Perhaps Environmentally Smart.....Deteriorates However Summary: 2 Stars
I picked up one of these years back when I got tired of running out of paper filers. Seemed like a convenient idea, and an environmentally smart one. The savings on the environment it is sorta of a no brainer. Although paper filters aren't very big, you have to imagine them being tossed out by the millions. Up front this one time purchase option seems like a good deal for the global warming adherent indeed. However strictly on the basis of a functional coffee grounds holder, it's all downhill from there as far as I am concerned. You have to dump the grounds and clean this thoroughly after each use. And its not the easiest thing to clean for sure. Its made of a very fine mesh that tends to hang on tenaciously to the wet grounds, and you have to flush it vigorously while holding it upside down to dislodge it all. You will end up digging at its insides manually to get them all out every time, which eventually bends the mesh out of shape. (The amount of water used in this process at least once daily I would say shouldn't set well with the environmentally conscious either). But the annoying cleaning process is not what bothers me most about this filter. Over time the mesh greatly discolors and can never be cleaned thoroughly to a fresh look. As someone that believes that the true key to a great cup of a coffee is spotlessly clean equipment, putting this grungy looking thing back in your basket holder day after day certainly isn't favorable to that theory. If you buy one of these it certainly won't be your last one. They have a life span like anything else, and chances are it will tend to get quite disgusting looking before you get around to replacing it. I only recommend this filter if you truly distaste the waste of paper filters, and, don't really care all that much about the best cup of morning coffee you can brew...
Customer Review: Green alternative to paper but overpriced Summary: 4 Stars
This filter came free with my new Mr. Coffee. Walmart sells coffee filters 100/$1, that's about 500 to 1000 paper filters depending on your final cost for this filter. I've used a similar one before. It can last over 5 years, and it usually dies when the mesh cracks from age and repeated use.
Pros
It makes a slightly stronger brew because the filter allows more oils through and in the longer run, one saves buying paper filters. Its greener to use it, since its less paper and trash for land fills.
It has a flat plastic sealed bottom, so the coffee is forced to strain to the sides, slowing the transit of hot water through the grinds like that of a paper filter.
Cons
Cleaning. You'll use water, time and effort rinsing this filter, after tapping out the grinds.
Less grinds. The filter is smaller than the removable cup so it has less volume as a paper filter. Using 4 measures of ground coffee cause my grinds to overflow past the plastic filter and into my coffee pot.
To clean it easier, I leave the grounds in the filter to dry out. I tap the inverted filter directly on a trash can or plate, and nearly all comes off as a lump or flakes out. You can wash off the rest. Its not any more a problem that cleaning a french press.
Customer Review: Nice filter Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this in a local store for a few bucks. I use it with my Mr. Coffee FTTX95 10-Cup Programmable Thermal Coffeemaker, Black/Stainless which also comes with a water filter. I was happy to find that I can still use the water filter with the metal basket.
I purchased this item because I had heard that metal baskets make better coffee and they're good for the environment (paper coffee filters are readily biodegradable, but the bleaching process used during their manufacture is not very eco-friendly). I can't say I've noticed a huge difference in taste (not surprising since I'm not a big coffee drinker and typically add a LOT of creamer when I do partake), BUT it is easy to use/clean and now I don't have to worry about the paper filter collapsing and letting grounds escape if the basket is a little wet. So far I haven't found a single ground in my coffee - it was worth the modest price for that alone.
Note:
To clean I dump the majority of the grounds in the garbage and then rinse off anything remaining into the sink.
Customer Review: Perfect for coffee makers that use the standard basket style filter Summary: 5 Stars
I used to use permanent filters that I found at the local grocer. They cost a couple of bucks, and seemed to work fine, but I never experienced the "awesome coffee" that permanent filters were supposed to help brew. Well, it all comes down to the materials.
The gold tone mesh is very fine, and what surprised me most was that it doesn't retain the stale odor of coffee grounds that the other, less expensive filters I bought, did - even when I put them in the dishwasher. With this filter, all I have to do is rinse it out - even if I've been too lazy to empty the filter after brewing a pot of coffee. I do, however, use a tiny bit of mild soap and a soft brush (it's a brush designed to clean wine glasses, actually, and is very handy with this) and whenever I run the dishwasher, I put the filter in on the top rack.
THIS filter helps make a GREAT cup of coffee.
(I also use purified drinking water from Hinckley Springs. That helps too. But not as much as the filter.)
