If anyone googles "coffee cholesterol" you will learn that it is no longer controversial about whether coffee that is not paper filtered raises cholesterol or not, and to a *very* significant degree. It does and this has been confirmed in over two dozen published medical tests. Here is a direct quote from the findings of one*.

The espresso amounts are based on a cup about half the size of other coffees, the amounts of bad cholesterol should be doubled to 3.0mg and 3.6mg.
Before the invention of the Mr. Coffee type drip brewers many tests showed that coffee drinkers lived shorter lifespan than non users. After most of the population in America switched to drip brewers, almost all of which used paper filters, the medical tests began to show coffee was not dangerous nor shortened lives. Doctors were surprised by this sudden reversal of the findings which was the clue that led to widespread testing of paper filtered coffee.
There are many health hazards in the world. Non paper filtered coffee is one of the few that is very easy to avoid. And if one does use paper filters the averages predict that you will live longer.
There are paper filters for many types of brewers. Hario makes a filter and papers that fit most brands of vacuum brewers (vac pots). A number 2 Melita will also work with that Hario filter. Ebay sellers offer regular Mr. Coffee sized filters with a hole punched in the center that fit most peculators.
It is possible to brew coffee most any method and then pour it through a removable basket of the normal drip makers. Coffee which takes a super fine grind will clog a paper filter. I pour it through one of these gold filters and then through a paper filter when making turkish coffee and then pour the coffee over areolatte whipped milk for a latte. But this takes out the foam which straight turkish drinker love. This method would work for espresso too for any drink where removing foam (crema) is may not be an issue, such as cappuccino or latte.
I am comforted by the fact that that laws require loggers to replant felled trees which makes paper one of the few products that is renewable and actually is being renewed. This is good for the environment.
