Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, BlackCustomer Review: Great Bargain, Great Coffee Summary: 5 Stars
If you are an infrequent coffee drinker, this coffee maker is a real bargain. At 20 bucks a pop, this is a cheap appliance that looks nice and makes great hot coffee.
Even if you are not a coffee drinker, this is smart choice for those who host an occassional guest or two. It takes up little space on the counter and looks nice considering how inexpensive it is. I've noticed no problems with the clock keeping accurate time.
Cons:
1. Seems to take almost as long to brew as most larger capacity coffee makers. About 4 minutes.
2. The filters are hard to come by but are available on the Internet. Suggestion: purchase 1 or 2 permanent filters and your set.
3. This "4 cup" maker will produce 2.5 fluid cups of coffee. This equates to about 3-4 "small" coffee cups- or 1.5 jumbo coffee cups.
4. You may get addicted to coffee once you try it- and then you will long for a larger capacity maker!
Customer Review: It DOES make plastic-tasting coffee Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this with great hopes, but the first cup of coffee, even though I carefully followed the instructions to rinse, etc., tasted and smelled VERY much like plastic, as another reviewer had warned. I could barely drink it (and wouldn't have had I been less in need of caffeine). This was with the same type and amount of coffee I always use. I carefully measured 1/4 cup of ground coffee per 12 ounces of water, rather than relying on the pot's markings. Considering the dangers of BPA in hard plastics (see the Milwaukee Journal on this, at [...]), it seems foolish to drink anything that reeks of plastic. So I took it back. I expect that this is the kind of product that ultimately will be outlawed, if the FDA can get the right to regulate it.
Oh, and another thing. The 4 cup capacity is indeed four 5-ounce cups, not 6-ounce, for a total of 20 ounces. If this matters to you as much as my first paragraph, all I can say is "Good luck!"
Customer Review: All that I expected for $20 Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this coffee maker so I could make my own coffee and, hopefully, save money. The coffee maker was only $20, and honestly I didn't expect much for that price when there are WAY pricier models out there. I've never had a coffee maker before, so I don't what is a "normal" amount of time to make a cup, but it seems quick enough for me. I don't intend to use the clock feature, and I unplug it after each use, so I have no idea if it would keep accurate time. That feature isn't important to me anyway.
All I wanted is a coffee maker that fits in my tiny apartment kitchen and makes enough coffee for one big cup of coffee, and this does both - although what they call four cups I call one serving. I don't know how long this will last, but for $20 it's still cheaper for me to replace this yearly compared to spending $2 a day at Dunkin Donuts, or $4 for a Frappucino at Starbucks. I am very satisfied with my little Mr. Coffee.
Customer Review: Mr. Coffee's Mini-Me! Save money by brewing what you drink. Avoid Clean Plate Syndrome Summary: 4 Stars
Now before I tell you about the coffee maker, let me say that I dislike "Clean Plate Syndrome" which is especially common in the Midwest where children and people in general are pressured into finishing everything on their plate. It leads to unhealthy feelings about food and listening to your body.
I was doing that with my coffeemaker. I was either trying to drink this huge pot of coffee or subconsciously refusing to only fill it partway and this Mr. Coffee "Mini-Me" solved that!
Now I brew and if I don't finish, who cares! The auto off is also nice because I am more aware of the coffee "going cold" because let's just admit it, burnt coffee is gross.
The only thing I would like is a way to disable the auto shutoff so I could come back over an evening and do refills. Otherwise, awesome little pot. Make sure you get coffee maker cleaning solution so your brew doesn't go bitter.
Customer Review: True, it doesn't hold 4 cups Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this coffee maker. I haven't had trouble with the clock, it keeps the time just fine. I used the timer option and my coffee was ready when I wanted it. The coffee maker turns off after 1 hour, which is nice for me because I always worried that I didn't turn off my old coffee maker. One less thing for me to think about on my way to work. I saw the reviews that stated the coffee maker doesn't hold 4 cups. This is a fact, I tested it myself and is the reason that I gave it 4 stars. It actually holds just over 3 measured cups of water. So if you have your heart set on exactly 4 cups of coffee, don't buy this coffee maker. I don't drink a ton of coffee every day so this doesn't upset me all that much. I just enjoy a large cup in the morning on my way to work and a few cups on the weekend. I find that this coffee maker does what I need it to do, even if it doesn't make exactly 4 cups of coffee.
