Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black

Customer Review: great little coffeemaker
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this coffeemaker to replace my old regular sized one that finally broke. I'm the only one in the house that drinks coffee and I only have two cups in the morning so this was just the right size.

It makes 20 oz. of coffee - which is perfect for my 10 oz. coffee mug. I haven't had a problem with it losing time or gaining minutes - I unplug it every morning when it's done anyway. No problems with setting it up at night and having my coffee ready when I wake up, either!

And quiet? I didn't realize how noisy my old one was until I got this one.

Coffee quality is great. I borrowed one from my mom for the few days between when the old one broke and this one arrived. It was awful. It brewed the water through so fast, I had a see-through clear brownish liquid in the pot when it was done - 2 minutes later. I literally had to use twice as much coffee in that thing. This Mr. Coffee 4-cup uses the same amount of coffee I've always used - 1 heaping Tbsp. per mug. Brews an excellent cup of coffee. And for the price - can't beat it!

If you don't need more than 20 oz. of coffee - this is the perfect coffeemaker!

Customer Review: Only 3 cups fit in this 4 cup coffee maker
Summary: 4 Stars

Let me start by saying that I only drink 2 cups of coffee so that is all I make. I previously had a 1 cup coffee maker but was frustrating to me to have to wait while a new cup brewed. So I got this little cutie. I noticed a discrepancy in the measurement lines both on the pot and on the side of the maker where you can see how much water you're pouring in. I measured out exactly 2 cups of water with a measuring cup, poured it into the machine, and it says I'm making 3 cups. So I measured out another 2 cups of water and poured that into the carafe and that also says I'm making 3 cups of coffee. I was curious to see if 4 cups actually fit into the maker. 4 cups spilled over. For this reason only I am not giving it 5 stars.

This isn't a problem for me, as, like I said before, I only need to make 2 cups. But I did find it unusual. I've had no problems with this coffeemaker. The "delay brew" feature works great and I've not had any problems with the clock losing minutes. As for the water spilling, I've found that this is usually due to a mistake on my part. Either the coffee pot isn't on correctly or the filter basket is askew.

Customer Review: Great product!
Summary: 5 Stars

My boyfriend and I live in an apt with a kitchen that has very little counter space. This tiny coffee maker is awesome for us. I use it to make hot water for tea and he uses it for coffee. It takes up virtually no space so I don't mind it being on the counter all the time. I have had two of these so far. My boyfriend chipped the pot of the first one... When I looked into replacing the tiny pot (through the mr. coffee co directly) it turns out it costs only a couple bucks more to buy a whole new one (through amazon)! Rather than replace just the pot, I went ahead and ordered another- so here we are on #2 and I still don't have a single complaint. I saw that some people complained about the clock running slow but I set all my clocks ahead a few minutes and have never noticed it fall behind. Honestly, you only get two cups outta a single brew with this machine, which is cool because I'd be worried about my bf's health if he was drinking more than two cups in a sitting anyway. So if you live alone, have a small space or just like a couple of cups of joe in the am, then this is probably the coffee maker for you.

Customer Review: Great Little Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

Great little coffee maker. Four cups is the perfect amount for a very large mug or two normal sized mugs.

Using the same amount of coffee to water ratio as some other coffee makers the coffee it makes is just slightly weaker, but this might be a good thing as it means its not over steeping the beans which can lead to a bitter cup of coffee. I just add two heaping tablespoons of coffee (Peet's) instead of level, and the result is a nice strong but not bitter cup of coffee.

Delay Brew works well, and it has a short memory w/o power, so say if the power goes out for 10 secs or your switching outlets you don't have to reset the clock which is nice. The one feature I wish it had is a control allowing the warming plate to be turned off or down, so it wouldn't burn your coffee after its been on there for 45mins, but not many coffee makers have that feature...(This one isn't especially hot or anything, and doesn't burn your anymore than any other coffee maker)

Overall great little machine, well built, easy to clean, and a pretty nice looking unit!

Customer Review: What do you expect?
Summary: 5 Stars

I wonder what some reviewers expected from a $20 coffeemaker? If they need a bigger machine, they should buy a bigger machine.
One should not expect the brewer to improve on foul tasting water or poor coffee. Get better water, buy decent coffee. All this thing needs is to be properly cleaned at purchase and occasionally thereafter.
Clock? Really - is this the principal timekeeper of the household? Check it now and then, like when a timed brew is needed. Adjusting it isn't rocket science. If used every day, does a minute a day really redefine your day?
Me, I start it up, make my minimal breakfast, and coffee's ready when I am - I mean really - four (4) minutes!!. One cup with the food, one more with the paper, and my day is underway.
So, buy what you need, don't buy this handy little machine and try to make it satisfy unreasonable expectations.
By the way, it didn't come with any 'brew basket' that works without either paper filters or a permanent filter. Buy 4-cup filters at the supermarket, or find a permanent filter - like at Amazon.
