Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Coffee DRX5 4-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Black

Customer Review: Great Inexpensive Drip Coffee Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this model based on the positive reviews I read here on Amazon as well as other websites. Our old 4 cup coffee maker which was also a Mr. Coffee is designed somewhat similar to this one but it did have some flaws. For example, it did not keep very accurate time which made setting the brew delay a cross your fingers event. The time would vary by as much as 30min on it sometimes. Also, it would leave a puddle of water around the base which had to be wiped up after each use. I tried moving the decanter around and making sure the filter basket door was completely closed, but nothing seemed to help. Needless to say my wife and I were getting a little tired of this, so I decided to look into getting a replacement. The old one is about 5 or 6 yrs old anyways. We,ve had this one for about a week now and so far the time appears to be very accurate and there is no puddle around the base of the coffee maker unlike the last one. On this one there is one lid on top that opens to gain access to the filter and to pour the water in. On my old one, there was a swing around basket for the filter and a lid on top for the water. I'm not sure if this one lid design is the cure for the puddle issue, but we certainly don't have it anymore. I give it two thumbs up and highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Awesome!
Summary: 5 Stars

It is a pleasure to wake up in the morning and find a nice HOT cup of coffee waiting for me. Cuts my time to get ready for work by at least a quarter of time.

Customer Review: A nice, cheap coffee maker. But not for the connoisseur.
Summary: 3 Stars

Well, I guess i've had it for quite a while now, I believe over half a year. I've broken-in Dunkin' Donuts pre-ground into it. Well, for the first two months or so, it tasted good. Now though, it's about watered down, and, erg.. I want to say bitter, but thats not quite the word.

So I cleaned it like the booklet said to, with vinegar (calcium deposits build up from the water and give it that off-taste. But it still doesn't taste right. I don't think this coffee maker would be for the typical coffee connoisseur; unless its the type of connoisseur who likes to savour the taste of bad sewer water mixed with stale folgers coffee.

Maybe i'm not quite cleaning it right, I don't know; but i've done everything the booklet has said and it never has tasted the same as before.

Everything else works fine, the programmable modes, timer, etc. There is no beeping or anything when its done making, just loud hissing from the steam; but I guess its loud enough to qualify as such... you'll definately know when its done.

In the end, I think its a good coffee maker for the people who don't care about the taste of coffee, and just drink it in the morning to get started or whatever, or because they're addicts.

Customer Review: Great size for one person, great coffee for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to add a good word for this coffee maker. It is the ideal size for one person and makes as good coffee as you can expect from an affordable auto-drip machine, unless you step up to a $200+ Technivorm.

A couple of quick tips to get the best out of your auto-drip machine:

1. Never leave coffee on the heating pad after it is done brewing. The constant heat will make the brew bitter with that characteristic "rest-stop coffee" taste.

2. If you grind your beans yourself, grind them just a hair finer than what you would consider a standard auto-drip grind. This will help extract a little more flavor. However if you grind too fine then the result will be bitter, if it drips at all.

To address a couple of complaints I saw in other reviews:

1. My brewer does not gain/lose time. This is most likely a function of the frequency of your electric supply as others have also pointed out.

2. The carafe is not especially prone to cracking. If it does, you are likely exposing it to sudden changes in temperature. Do not rinse the carafe with cold water just before or after you brew coffee.

Happy brewing.

Customer Review: This is NOT a 4-cup coffee maker
Summary: 1 Stars

This coffee maker is ridiculously small and does not make 4 cups of coffee as advertised. This is the first coffee maker that I have purchased since 1984. The old one was a "regular" sized one and it always worked fine, bubt finally broke, so I went shopping for a new one. I drink two 12 ounce travel mugs of coffee in the morning and am the only coffee drinker in the house. Occassionally we make more coffee when friends are over. I ordered this 4-cup coffee maker with the reasonable expectation that it will brew 4 x 8 oz. = 32 ounces of coffee at a time, and would, therefore, satisfy my need for 24 ounces of coffee each morning. In fact it brews a maximum of 20 ounces. Since when is a cup equal to 5 ounces? This is ludicrous. If I buy a 1-gallon jug of water, I expect it to contain 128 ounces of water. If I buy a pint of beer, then I resonably expect to get a 16 ounce beer. This constitutes false advertising when Mr. Coffee says that they are selling me a 4-cup coffee maker and it only makes 20 ounces. Last I checked, a cup is 8 ounces. If a recipe calls for 1 cup of liquid, it darn well means 8 ounces. Mr. Coffee is ripping you off if you buy this coffee maker.
