Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Beer Premium Edition Home Microbrewery System

Customer Review: Great for first timer, but PATIENCE is key
Summary: 5 Stars

My future mother-in-law bought this for me as a gift. I read some of the reviews that talked about waiting before I brewed my first batch so I waited a total of 23 days before tasting. 9 days in the fermenter keg then 2 weeks carbonating in the bottle. While I thought my beer was really good, I soon learned from the Mr. Beer websit community forums that a full 42 days(6 weeks) garners the best tasting brews.

When I followed that advice, my beer was simply awesome! You let it sit 14 days(2 weeks) in the fermenter keg then 28 days (4 weeks) in the bottles at room temperature out of direct sunlight. I sit mine on towels and then wrap the towels around them to maintain a constant temperature. The cold conditioning that the Mr. Beer instructions say shouldn't even be mentioned. The yeast in the bottle stops working if you chill the bottles. So the conditioning process should be to leave them exactly where you kept them after you bottled them. The experts call the process 2-2-2 for 2 weeks for each step (fermenting, bottling, conditioning) but it's really 2-4 because you just leave them in the bottles, out of any direct sunlight, at room temperature (68-70 degrees) for 4 weeks. I know it sounds like a long time to wait but you will thank yourself. If you aren't sure, taste a beer that you only spent 3 weeks on then one that you waited the full 6.

Customer Review: A wonderful little 'learning' kit.
Summary: 5 Stars

What more can one say about a kit that is only $40 and includes everything you will need to make 3 two-gallon batches of beer? While it isn't the highest quality beer, it is a fantastic learning experience and can certainly whet your appetite for homebrewing. For me, this kit was only the beginning of my exploration into the world and art of home beermaking. I have since bought a few books, higher quality equipment and begun experimenting using different malt, hop and yeast combinations from my local homebrew supply store (which you can do with this kit as well).

Prior to this kit, I really didn't consider myself a huge beer aficionado...just a casual enjoyer of a nice cold pint. While I am not a master brewer now, learning about brewing has increased my appreciation of what goes into the making of beer and the long and fascinating history behind it.

Right now we are in a heyday of home and micro-brewing with new local breweries opening constantly. Go ahead and get this kit, now is a great time to learn about humanity's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage. And let's not forget that in these days of 'going green,' making your own brew is the environmentally friendly way to go.

So educate yourself and save the environment while you're at it!!! Drink homemade beer!!!

Customer Review: I Love You, Mr Beer and Amazon!
Summary: 5 Stars

I should probably wait until I use this product to review, so I may come back and edit my review after the fact. I just wanted to say that I've gotten a LOT of great tips from the commenters on this site. I will use unhopped liquid malt instead of the booster and liquid yeast instead of the dry. I will buy the swing top glass bottles for sure. My first batch is going to be an Octoberfest Cream Ale and I may add some brown sugar or chocolate to it. The possibilities are endless!

The product arrived VERY quickly. I just ordered it 4 days ago--no joke! And everything was perfect. It was not dusty or broken or missing any parts. The book that came with the product was really nice too. I am new to making beer so I liked how the book broke down what each ingredient did and how it explained the history of beer making. The book also contains really great recipes!! The Mr Beer website is really helpful too. These guys truly love the beer making process and it shows!

My husband is very excited that I am embarking on this new hobby. Imagine making beer for your friends instead of buying them presents! At this great price and in this economy, it seems crazy to NOT buy one of these kits.

Keep up the great tips on here, commenters! They are greatly appreciated.

Customer Review: Really Good for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I still dont know how the final product is going to come out, but before bottling I took a little taste and it was pretty ok. It kind of tasted like flat beer, which i've heard is what it should taste like, i was a little worried about flavor because I used tap water and my sanitation was mediocre, however i am excited to taste the final product in a few weeks, hopefully I can wait that long... it is cheap and good for the money if you plan on brewing for a long time i would buy a more expensive one, but if you are just experimenting to see if you like it this is a much easier way then from scratch ... takes 1 hour to make the wort, while scratch takes about 8 hours to brew the wort....
now i've been a little bit impatient with allowing time to ferment and bottling, i let it ferment for 10 days bottled for 9 days then took one bottle and conditioned it in the fridge for 2 days i know i should have given it more time but it came out really good still just make sure not to pour the trub into your glass when drinking, it leads to an off flavor

Customer Review: Gotta Agree with the Others
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so this cuts a bunch of corners from traditional beer brewing. That's the appeal! This makes home brewing so easy, that if true home brewers didn't turn their noses up, something would be wrong.

I'm a busy guy with two kids and a self-owned business. There's little time in my life for hobbies. Having a kit like this allows me to brew beer at home with only about 1/2 hour per session committed.

The fun part is that the ingredients are so varied that you can literally mix and match with endless combinations of flavors, bodies, alcohol contents, etc. It's not a true "just add water" system as I've heard suggested. If it were, the fun would be gone. You do have to put together a recipe (many of which are available online to get you started) and go for it.

Beer brewing for the time impaired person with other responsibilities. It's lot's of fun and the beer is darned good too.
