Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Beer 3-Beer Mix Variety Pack

Customer Review: Still brewing...
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm on my second batch...and on the way to becoming a real brewmeister. ;-)

I'll just post some observations on the process as I've experienced it:

* turns out that for me at least...7 days is overly enthusiastic...I'm resigned to brewing for 3 weeks and finishing off in the bottles for 2 weeks...even with the simpler beers.

* DO NOT stir up the dead yeast in the bottom of the keg...this will result in poor tasting beer...even after it settles out.

* be very careful with keeping things sterile...I use a small filter mask during the critical stages

* I clean off the keg spigot with the cleaner provided so I can rest the bottle opening on it and try to prevent air getting into the beer at bottling time...I then hold the closed bottle horizontally and roll it till the sugar dissolves.

* I'd recommend the 2 liter soda bottles...free and less effort than the quart size. I use the green ones.

* I've seen some decent beer and some off tasting beer. These simpler beers with the booster are really a light beer...and they might have a sort of yeasty taste at times...and they are different. Will be trying the more advanced beers and the cider without the booster soon.

* The brewing process is not all HAPPY...HAPPY...there are details to watch and chances you take...and if you catch yourself always watching the keg bubble...you have issues...best to get it going and forget it till bottling time. It's a lot easier to just go buy some beer...but life isn't meant to be easy...is it? ;-) The process is something like gardening...you need to respect it...and enjoy it for what it is. Harvest time is just the bonus.

Customer Review: Tasty Beer
Summary: 5 Stars

3-Beer Mix Variety Pack
- Oktoberfest Vienna Lager - Dark Ale color, good carbonation, good head retention, almost no bitterness w/ slight sweetness (my wife's favorite). Easy drinking beer.
- High Country Canadian Draft - Clear golden color, good carbonation, good head retention, pleasing bitterness. Another tasty beer.
- Whispering Wheat Weizenbier - Deep golden color, good carbonation, good head retention, caramel finish. Flavorful but the slight sweetness makes it not one of my favorites.

Preferring American style light (Coors, Bud, Miller) beer, the quality from all the Mr. Beer brews I've made are all tastier. Published alcohol content may be less, but the actual "hit" is better than any light beer. Don't know were some of the reviewers got their "watery" taste and no "head" opinions. More likely, these sub-standard results were due to their using less than ideal sanitazion conditions, using tap chlorinated water, and/or rushing the brewing process.
Got a lot of good tips from various online reviews, which minimized/eliminated mistakes. When one batch of beer is ready for bottling, reserve yourself 3 hours to bottle starting from a fully fermented keg, then re-clean, re-sanitize and have another brew batch inside the keg to start re-fermenting. My greatest advise would be to take your time in all aspects. It will result in a home made beer you can be proud off. Am using 2 fermenting kegs to get brewing into full production. Saving money is one thing, but drinking terrific tasting beer is the all-important consideration. My days of buying retail beer are history thanks to Mr. Beer and Amazon's great service.

Customer Review: Great Beer at a great price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just recently started making these kits and really like the finished product especially the Vienna Lager. I don't use the Mr. Beer Keg. I use a 5 gallon plastic water carboy. I can make two kits at once. I buy 4 of these variety packs at a time. My goal is to make all the beer I drink. I think its possible and its a lot cheaper than store bought. A case of beer I like costs about $14 a gallon. With theses kits and purchasing them with the 4 for 3 special I can make beer for less than $4 a gallon and its better beer than the stuff I buy and I am recycling bottles every time. Its a bit of work but quite worth the time. I have a couple cases in bottles now and I just started another batch today. I figure I need to put up 4 gallons of beer every 7-10 days to meet my demand. You can go to your local brew shop to pick up a few things you'll need like airlocks. Have fun!!

Customer Review: Mr. Beer 3 pack
Summary: 4 Stars

I have just started brewing with Mr. Beer. If you enjoy beer, this is a fun way to get started in making your own quality beer. As long as you only want to brew 2 1/2 gallons at time, this is perfect. If you want more, you should start with this and then "graduate" to more advanced systems.

The 3 pack offers a multitude of varieties if you also purchase Unhopped Malt Extract (UME) from Mr. Beer. There are a lot of recipes on the Mr. Beer site that make the 3 packs you have purchased very versatile.

I would give this 5 stars, except for the fact that you have to throw away the yeast that comes with it. It is not strong or consistent. You should go to a local brew store and purchase fresh ale or lager yeast. You won't be dissapointed.

Customer Review: Buy more than one!
Summary: 5 Stars

These make great beer! It doesn't come with complete instructions so make sure you refer to your Mr. Beer kit instructions or go to mrbeer.com. You must let it ferment for 2 weeks, then after bottling, let set at least 3-4 weeks at room temp. The results will be amazing. If you ferment 1 week, then drink after 1 week in bottle, you get poor beer. It needs to condition!

I also suggest, after doing a few batches, check out mrbeer.com and search for recipes using these HMEs. Find some you like and just buy the extra ingredients. It's cheaper than buying the whole kit from mr. beer, and the recipes will blow you away! Much better than the simple recipes.. though these are good by theirselves too.
