Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mr. Bar-B-Q Cast-Iron WokCustomer Review: A very nice wok for very little cost Summary: 5 Stars
I am not sure I bothered reading the size of this wok, but like I always do I try to get items with free shipping (because normaly free shipping does not take long to get to my neighborhood). I was suprise to see when it came in how large it really was pound per pound it was cheaper then most of the cast iron I have purchased.
I love cast iron because you don't have to worry about any added chemicals (though you do get extra iron in your diet :-) ), its cook ware for life, and its not really hard to clean. Since I am not a big fan of gas stove, I get even heating on electric range from my cast iron cook ware.
Customer Review: EXCELLENT Summary: 5 Stars
Following the advise of others on the web re: cast iron I boiled soapy water in the wok first, scrubbed it with a copper pad to remove any residual machining oil. Lightly treated it with oil and put it in a 250 degree oven for one hour to cure.
Works GREAT, heats quickly, it is very heavy however clean up is a snap and it produces beautiful results on both my gas range and outdoors on the BBQ...PLUS I loved the price and the quality wonderful. In fact, I like this wok so much and have found so many uses for it, other than the obvious preparation of asian food, that I just leave it out on my back burner.
Customer Review: Great, but re-season it. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a fantastic wok. It has a round bottom on the inside and a flat bottom on the outside so it fits on a flattop stove with no problems. It's the closest your gonna get to a traditional thin-steel wok on this kind of stove. HOWEVER, the fist time I heated this thing up it emitted some seriously noxious fumes. A the *least* you need to throughly wash the thing (with soap) before you use it. A better option would be to totally re-season it. The factory seasoning can be removed by running it through your oven's self-cleaning cycle. This will turn the existing seasoning to ash which you can easily wash off.
Customer Review: Cautiously optimistic Summary: 4 Stars
Caution: don't buy accessories until you receive the wok. The product description says 16"x16"x5" (soon to be corrected, I am told) . Its actual size is 14.25"x14.25"x4". I bought a lid fit for a 16" wok at the same time and of course it is too big. I am not going to bore you with the exchange and return trouble I had. I am writing off more than $15 on these transactions.
Optimistic: I am keeping the wok! It is a nice cast iron wok. 14.25" round is usable; I wish it is bigger though. I used to use (bigger) cast iron woks in China and I surely miss them. I hope mine doesn't crack like the other reviews say.
Customer Review: Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, this wok is heavy but it's worth it...and you're not lifting it while cooking so what does it matter? I could easily cook for a large family because this is a pretty huge wok. It heats up quickly and evenly. I mainly use it for stir-fry meals but I have made Sloppy Joes in it and will try it for soups also. The first wok was totally destroyed during shipping, UPS returned it without even bringing it to the door, but Amazon was quick to send out a new one and give me a little credit for the extra waiting time.
