Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Misto Gourmet Olive Oil Sprayer, Brushed AluminumCustomer Review: Works great, remember to clear by spraying upside down until clear Summary: 5 Stars
This works great, put your favorite oil in, pump and spray. This doesn't produce as fine of mist as Pam spray, but it still produces a nice even coat. A little more blotchy than Pam, but I get straight oil, none of the stuff they put in Pam.
Don't forget to clear the nozzle when done by holding the spray bottle upside down and spray until the pressure is gone. This will clean out the intake tube and prevent the dribbling as the 1 star poster mentioned. Do this in the sink so you don't make a mess. It is also a good idea to clean this occasionally, run some soapy water through it and then rinse until no soap comes out the nozzle.
I am very happy with the Misto oil sprayer, and it works great for bread baking. This doesn't work great for keep the bread from sticking to the a deep bread pan (use Pam or equivalent for this, works better), but it is great for misting the top of the loaves to prevent them from drying during proofing. I reach for my Misto almost every time I cook.
Customer Review: From Instant Joy ... To reality and Disapointment Summary: 1 Stars
I really thought I would love this. I was paying an outrageous amount to buy olive oil in spray can's from the store and thought this would be a really great way to apply only a limited amount, but not pay the cost (per oz) that comes with the spray can.
Unfortunately, it doesn't spray well. At first there is too much pressure and it's just a stream, then it becomes a mist like spray (what I wanted) but it only last a second before it becomes too low a pressure and it starts a very jerky uneven spray.
After only a short period of use, I suddenly realized I had used almost a whole bottle of olive oil already. I was paying less than the spray can, but I was consuming more than 10 times the amount of oil I thought I was using. Needless to say, I have the added weight gain to show for it.
Also, with normal regular use, there ends up being oil all over the canister, the table, and a lot of other surfaces around the general spray area of my food prep area.
Customer Review: Don't Waste Your Money... Summary: 1 Stars
Thought this would be a great idea, so I bought three of these to use for different kinds of oil. Within a few weeks of use, all three were broken/malfunctioning to the point of being tossed in the trash. I am an EXTREMELY careful person. I read all directions and followed them to the letter, to no avail. The white plastic top broke on two of them. All three stopped spraying, first coming out in a stream or dribble, then not even that. I thought they were getting plugged with some unseen particles, so I tried straining the oil and cleaning the unit, which was a difficult messy job with no better results. And I, also, noticed that the oil tended to become rancid in very short order, probably due to the fact that you are pressurizing (forcing) air into the oil. In addition, the squared off edges on the top hurt your hand when you have to pump the unit. Now, I'm back to generic "Pam" or using a dribble of oil and a silicone basting brush. Don't waste your money like I did...
Customer Review: Very handy gadget Summary: 5 Stars
We grill a lot of vegetables in my household (both on the grill, and in the oven in the wintertime), and this is a great device. Gives a light, uniform coating of oil to the veggies. Other things I use it for include oiling pans, my grill, and for misting the top of an italian pie or calzone with olive oil before baking for a nice golden color. Also, if you coat chicken in a bread crumb mixture, spray it with oil, and then bake it, it comes out crispy on the outside...a healthy alternative if you miss the taste of fried chicken. We have one, and are ordering a second, so that we can have one for olive oil and another for a lighter vegetable oil. About the only complaint I have is that if you pump it up too much, the oil mists too well! You'll get a light coating of oil on whatever you're spraying, but there will also be this cloud of tiny oil droplets hanging in the air. What I've learned from experience is just not to pump it up too much.
Customer Review: A Green Product that pays for itself Summary: 4 Stars
I love making Bruschetta and Pannini but was tired of the mess of brushing olive oil on the bread. An aerosol spray can of olive oil cooking spray works great, but I worry about the additives. (And the taste isn't the best.) The Misto has been my solution. I know exactly what I'm spraying and it works great. For the cost of a couple of cans of cooking spray, you have a sprayer that you can refill and use over and over again. And no more empty aerosol cans being sent to the landfill.
To get a really fine mist, you have to pump the top until the built-up pressure doesn't allow you to pump any more. Then, after use, twist the top to open it a crack and release the pressure. This prevents clogging, which can be a messy problem.
NOTE ABOUT AMAZON PRIME SHIPPING: I've been very impressed with Amazon Prime. I ordered this product at 5 PM on a Friday, and I received it by noon the next day. Practically instantaneous gratification.
