Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Misto Gourmet Olive Oil Sprayer, Brushed Aluminum

Customer Review: Nice ..but not for Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Summary: 4 Stars

Misto has been producing a fine spray for me so far and has helped us get away from PAM and similar line of products which have added chemicals.

Over filling it doesn't produce the mist, filling the canister to 1/3 its capacity has produced the mist and the oil's lasted pretty long for me too. Of course you have to pump it pretty often, but its not difficult at all, unless your hands are abnormally weak or you have arthiritis.

I have used it to spray lighter oils like canola and its been working fine. But with Extra Virgin Olive Oil, it stopped working after 2 weeks and started leaking the air that I pumped into it. Then I cleaned it with soap water and it started working properly.

Taking the pressure out once in a while is a good thing and I am blindly following it (after reading many reviewers say that) I suggest you do the same..

To summarize -

- Use lighter oils, dont use EVOO
- Release the pressure after use .. may be after cooking your last meal of the day
- Clean when you can hear the hiss of pressure being released - even when the cap is sealed.
- Dont overfill the canister and pump when the pressure becomes low.

End of the tutorial :-)

Customer Review: No more propellants!
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading some poor reviews of the Misto Sprayer, I had to add my opinion/s. My first Misto lasted about 3 to 4 years before the seal or collar wore out. I just replaced it with another; and that, too, is fine.

I did not have any of the problems other reviewers had. I really like the idea of being able to spray different oils and not being restricted to whichever can I had on hand.

Let's face it -- it is not a spray can propelled by chemicals and will not spray like one. But I would rather pump and mist on some oil than feed my children food laced with propellants.

Maintenance is easy. It should be thoroughly washed before its initial use. Thereafter, it does not have to be cleaned often, as it contains only oil (which has a long shelf life). I washed mine only when there were visible signs of need, and it was not that often (maybe 2 or 3 times total with the first one).

If you expect this to spray like the can, you will most likely be a bit disappointed. If you feel omitting chemicals from your diet is important and appreciate the natural flavor of oil in your cuisine, then you will rejoice and praise the almighty Misto! (Okay, that's a little much, but I like the thing. It serves its purpose well.)

Customer Review: LOVE IT!
Summary: 5 Stars

am on a constant crusade to cut back on the amount of garbage my family produces. We do a very good job of recycling everything we can, but its important to remember that recycling isn't a perfect solution. While it is great to avoid sending more trash to the landfill, recycling requires a considerably amount of energy. Its far better not to consume in the first place!

With all that said, I am determined to find creative ways to run my household effectively and thoughtfully. I found a great product called the Misto Olive Oil Sprayer. With the Misto, I no longer have to purchase cooking spray for use when baking cookies or sauteeing vegetable.

A can of Pam Cooking Spray costs $4.49, but the Misto cost only $[...] (and I had a coupon so it cost me $7.50). I bought two - one for olive oil and one for vegetable oil. The Misto is easy to use - fill it 1/3 up with oil, pump 10 times, and spray onto the pan. Now that I use the Misto I understand just how little oil actually comes in a can of Pam, making the Misto an even better value. Its a great way to further reduce the waste we send to the landfill and save a few bucks!

Customer Review: Simple, reliable efficient, and versatile...just keep it clean.
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought one a year ago and use it frequently, mostly with olive oil, and it works wonderfully. The key is keeping it clean, and that mostly means not letting anything sit in it for too many months as it could gum-up the pump. If it gets gummed-up, just open it up and rinse in hot water. (We had to a couple times, ourselves.)

Here's a couple of other uses for which we love this for...

1. Popcorn sprayer: We spray oil on our air-popped popcorn (which, of course, is drier than you can imagine), and lets popcorn salt stick to the popcorn with the most minimal amount of oil used. It's great for making theater-quality popcorn for movie nights and uses less than half the oil/butter/whatever you'd use otherwise. We prefer extra virgin olive oil with Johnny's Popcorn Salt. :)

2. Salad spritzer: Put in an inch of oil and vinegar, pump it up, shake a vigorously once or twice, and spray immediately. You can also use many commercial salad dressings as long as there aren't any lumps that could clog the pump or spray nozzle. We've found several Neumann's Own dressings work well.

Customer Review: A way to unclog the sprayer
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree that this is a great sprayer. If you grill a lot, it can be worthwhile to have two sprayers: one for olive oil and one with a high-temperature, low-smoke oil like canola or safflower oil for grilling. I use my sprayer with olive oil, with its better flavor, for anything other than high-heat grilling. I like spraying salads with just a light layer of olive oil. This imparts a nice flavor without much fat, and you can really taste your greens and veggies.

To lessen the risk of clogging your sprayer, I would recommend avoiding extra virgin olive oil, which is very thick and sticky. A light olive oil works better. And if the sprayer DOES become clogged, I recommend half-filling the sprayer with a solution of one part vineger and one part warm water. If you pump this up and spray it out, you will clean and unclog the sprayer--often this happens within seconds--and be ready to go. I can't seem to avoid clogging the sprayer every 6 months or so, but this vineger and water solution really works well for me. This also works on other sprayers, if you happen to own one of those.
