Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Misto Gourmet Olive Oil Sprayer, Brushed AluminumCustomer Review: could be better Summary: 4 Stars
I had a Pampered Chef sprayer that I loved, but it got clogged and stopped working after 2 or 3 years. I should have tried harder to find a Pampered Chef rep to buy another one, the Pampered Chef one works better than this one.
However, this is not a horrible product. One drawback compared to the Pampered Chef one is that you can't see through this one to see how high the oil level is. You want to fill it just a bit higher than halfway, and when it is less than 1/3 full you need to fill it back up or it won't work as well. This unit is even more finicky than the Pampered Chef one about the level, it almost won't spray if the level is too low. But since you can't see through it, even holding it up to the light, you have to look down in and estimate how high it is. The reflective coating inside makes it very hard to see how high it really is. You don't want to fill it all the way up, either.
Then, you need to pump it more than the Pampered Chef one needed to be pumped. This one sprays a very fine spray, finer than the Pampered Chef one. And it sprays quite nicely if you have the correct level of oil in there.
I think I know why my old one got clogged. So I'm trying something new: each time I'm done, before I put it away, I twist the screw on cap around the nozzle and release the pressure. I think if you leave it pressured up all the time, like I did with my old one, it damages the nozzle over time. But time will tell if I'm right.
Another tip -- don't fill it with anything but olive oil. Other oils evaporate and leave a sticky/greasy feeling on the outside of the sprayer. You know what I mean if you use vegetable oil for stovetop cooking a lot, you get that greasy feeling on things that you leave near the stove or that hang over it. Olive oil doesn't do that, that's why I now don't use anything else on my stovetop (except sometimes peanut oil for stir frying). This type of sprayer will work much better if you just use Olive Oil in it, trust me.
But if you have a choice, go find a Pampered Chef rep and by their sprayer. It's cheaper and better quality.
Customer Review: Reasonable item for its price Summary: 4 Stars
Have had this item for months now. I don't bother to "release" the pressure (discussed in the instructions for it) and I do only fill part ways. If I get clogging I will come back and post my sins in a later update. I probably should have given it a "5 star" as compared to other options on the market, but I'm rather stingy with 5 star ratings.. :)
I only fill about 25% not only because they instruct you to, but I don't use enough.. the oil has a tendency to get "randy".. that is to have a slightly "off" taste.. if you don't use it fairly quickly ...this is not a problem with the sprayer.. just that oils "oxidize" in the open air. I wash it after each "emptying".. they suggest you wash them every 3 months or so, so this works out nicely. The other reason to fill partway is that the air provides the "engine".. more air, longer sprays with one pumpup..
I bought two, one for olive oil and one for "salad oil" (whatever vegetable oil you like). The oil sprays nicely.. I thought it would be more of a stream, but it is atomized pretty evenly over the area. In fact it does such a great job that it will leave a "cloud of oil" floating around your kitchen if you spray holding it too far from your "target".
I use it for salads, items to be browned (much more efficient than glopping it onto the pan), and for popcorn (love popcorn with olive oil.. or you could use a "butter flavored oil too I suppose)
The only negative I had is that I knocked it off the shelf onto the stove (about 3 ft drop) and it dented a bit (note it didn't break). This is due to the aluminum which is QUITE SOFT. They offer a STAINLESS STEEL version of this same pump which may be considerably stiffer, but it is considerably more expensive. Contrary to others who have posted I find them to be pretty sturdy for a $10 item, and based on the stream of reviews here, I think its clear they have improved it over the last couple of years.

Customer Review: I'm completely satisfied with my Misto Summary: 5 Stars
Update *** 3/28/2010
Still working great! I use mostly for olive oil, still a nice fine mist, uses much less oil than swirling some around in a pan, can't say enough good things about it
Original Review -
I bought it to reduce the amount of oil I use in cooking and it works wonderfully. I've had mine for 4+ years and it's showing no signs of wear. Fill it about halfway full, pump it up pretty hard, next I spray a little into my sink to make sure it's misting. If it isn't pump it up a little more and give it another short spray in the sink and it should work. If you have left it sitting for a long time with oil in it and haven't used you may have to pump it up turn it upside down (with spray nozzle at the bottom of your sink), press the sprayer and clear the tube, it's never failed for me. At the end of each use, slowly replace the top while pressing down softly, twist the top back and forth until it is seated, it's well worth the few seconds of effort.
Don't get me wrong, it works as you expect 99% of the time, but the above steps are for those rare occasions when it doesn't.
Think of the savings, a fine mist of oil where previously you tried to pour just a little bit on. The benefits aren't just with the cost of the oil, but the lighter more delicious foods, that still inherit the taste of your extra virgin olive oil with a fraction of the calories. Of course as some of the other reviewers have pointed out you can have multiple Mistos for other oils.
A light spray of oil, refillable so you aren't adding the waste problem, works for years with absolutely minimal maintenance, and less than $10. You really can't ask for more.
Bon appétit
Customer Review: Life is too short to eat bad food! Summary: 5 Stars
My last Misto endured over three years of constant daily use, many times each day, so I am back to order another, my third in ten years of cooking almost everything from scratch. I consider that to be an excellent track record!
Since we've started using an oil mister in our cooking, we have noticed that we go through MUCH less oil (and therefore consume much less fat). It takes surprisingly little olive or canola oil to coat a skillet for frying, and I also use a light spray of olive oil over the tops of vegetables, instead of saute'ing them in butter. Just a spritz is enough to get eggplant or squash to tender up nicely. It's nice to know I can have control over what goes into my family's food - I was never comfortable with "aerosol cooking spray" and am even less so, now that they've switched from trans-fats to god-only-knows-what kind of "non-fat" (read: non-food) substance.
I like to use unfiltered olive oil when I can find it, so I definitely get clogs in the nozzle from time to time. I learned early on that washing in hot, soapy water does not do the trick. Instead, I pull off the nozzle button and rinse it in warm water, then I suck on the bottom of the button until the clog pops out in the opposite direction from which it went in in the first place (I hope that doesn't sound too gross - it IS effective! And after all, it's only solidified olive oil.) Then I wash the button (and all the other parts while I'm at it) in warm, soapy water.
Customer Review: Spray somewhat uneven, but still worth the price Summary: 4 Stars
When used properly the mist is rather fine with a few larger spurts. Since, I'm not getting graded on my spray technique and I'm still using less oil than if I poured it from the bottle, this mister works great for me. I also love the fact that I no longer need to purchase aerosol sprays in addition regular oil.
If used improperly, this thing will spit oil, very unevenly, and you will not be happy with it. A few hints I've followed from other reviewers:
- instructions say to pump it 10 times and then spray. Sometimes 10 isn't enough to fully pressurize the canister. If you spray when not fully pressurized the oil comes out in spurts. I pump the mister until I feel enough resistance that it feels like I have to start applying muscle. Although 10 may not be enough, don't worry. I've never had to go over 13, so it isn't like you will have to pump this thing for an hour.
- instructions say to only fill it halfway. It works best when no more than halfway full so that there is enough air space to build up pressure. If over-filled, the initial second of spray will be great, then it loses pressure quickly and starts spitting oil.
- I always release the pressure when I'm done and I do not have problems getting the cap to stay on.
