Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of MisterMax ANTI ICKY POO "UNSCENTED" GALLONCustomer Review: Don't use in a crawl space Summary: 1 Stars
This is a cautionary tale. If you have a urine smell in your crawl space, think twice before using Anti Icky Poo to get rid of it.
When the summer heat and humidity first hit us (Alabama) earlier this year, a corner of our crawl space started to stink of urine. The smell got sucked into the house via our heating/cooling system - all the equipment and ducts are in the crawlspace. I got a good UV flashlight and looked/sniffed every where - over the entire crawl space. I couldn't find anything - no urine, no poop, no dead animals, and no mold - anywhere down there.
[As background info: Our entire crawl space 'floor' is covered with a plastic sheet. In the smelly corner, we also had a tarp (12'x16') covering the plastic - because it's a high traffic area.]
Next, I misted some Anti Icky Poo (unscented) on the tarp in that corner. That stopped the urine smell overnight - and it stayed gone.
Unfortunately, a different smell was ready for us the next day. It's not a mold smell, a urine smell, a poop smell or a dead animal smell. It's not a chemical smell. I guess it's a cross between the usual earth smell in the crawl space and something like a moderate dead animal smell. But it's very strong.
I sprayed the tarp again with the Anti Icky Poo (unscented) and it just made the smell a little worse. The smell seems to be triggered by moisture since on dry days, it is not as bad. I pulled the tarp out of the crawl space. It smelled a lot, especially when damp. The smell under the house was still strong though, even with the tarp gone.
Next, I pulled one of the batts of insulation out from between the floor joists. When dry, it had a slight odor. After I misted it with Anti Icky Poo it started to stink just like the tarp. On the other hand, the empty space between the joists, where that batt had been, smelled good - just a nice wood smell.
My next step was to pull all the insulation down from between the floor joists and throw it away. That made a noticeable difference for the better.
[When I pulled the insulation down, I found that some nut-eating critters had been hanging out within and above the insulation. We had a very cold winter last year. That must have driven the mice, or whatever, into our crawl space for warmth. While there, they must have peed quite bit. That is the likely source of our original urine smell.
They spent most of their time in two spots, both pretty close to the crawl door. That was their most likely entry point. There were minor caches in five or ten other places, farther from the door.]
Anyway, after the insulation and nut shells were gone, we still had a fairly strong smell.
I called the manufacturer of Anti Icky Poo and spoke with their technical support person. He suggested using a garden sprayer, with some more Anti Icky Poo (unscented), on the entire area - ground, walls and the underside of the floor.
I did that and the smell got worse than it had ever been. Same smell.
All summer I tried different things to get rid of the smell. The smell has resisted multiple applications of three other odor removal products. I've been blowing the smell out one of the vents with a box fan.
Now that Fall has arrived, the humidity level has gone way down, and the smell is not as bad. For now, it's a tolerable situation. However, next summer, I expect the smell to be a problem again.
My theory is that the Anti Icky Poo reacted with some naturally occurring, normally harmless substance, in the crawl space - creating this very unpleasant and very durable smell.
There are still things I can try to solve this problem. I can seal the crawl space and put a dehumidifier down there. I might be able to cover up some of the smell with an odor blocking primer.
I will eventually recover from this domestic disaster.
Hopefully this cautionary tale may help you avoid a similar one.
