Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mikasa Cheers Balloon Wine Goblet, Set of 4Customer Review: A thing of beauty...and a joy for five minutes Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not blaming Mikasa for what happened. I take full responsibility because I should have known what happens when you invite a friend's soccer buddies over for post-game brunch. First of all, they come straight from the game. No post-running-around-and-rolling-in-the-dirt-on-a-day-when-the-mercury-hit-100 degrees clean up. Again, this was no one's fault but my own, because I neglected to add the phrase "no stinking up the joint" to the invitations.
The goblets are lovely, the etched lines are crisp and give them a contemporary, upbeat look. They are generous in proportion for those who like to do the swirl and count the dog's legs ritual, or those who simply enjoy a fine bouquet. Among societies whose members have both feet in the "evolved beyond knuckle-walking" camp, these goblets would be a fine complement to a casual buffet setting. However, they are made of glass and with some people, you need to serve beverages in a hubcap to avoid breakage.
There is no way, apparently, to describe certain soccer moves without frantic arm waving, violent kicking motions and body-slamming the hostess. Who is--or was--holding a wine glass. As it turns out, almost any topic of conversation embarked upon by a bunch of sweaty guys, all agog and excited about coming this close to not losing (I didn't say they were good soccer players, just that they were soccer players and besides, for their combined age--which totals 11,274 years--not having a coronary on the playing field is the real victory), requires a great deal of motion and knocking people over. People who are -- or were -- holding wine glasses.
I still give the Mikasa goblets a five-star review. They were innocent bystanders, much the same as those poor people on the Hindenberg were not responsible for what eventually happened. And I did learn two important lessons: One, when entertaining people who are avid sports enthusiasts, serve white wine; and two, never entertain people who are avid sports enthusiasts. There was, however, one bright spot in the day: One of the team members is a dentist, and it wasn't my tooth.
