Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Mighty Putty 3-Pack

Customer Review: The Mighty Hath Fallen
Summary: 3 Stars

I've never had a reason not to trust Billy Mays - the friendly, shouting, bearded man in the blue shirt. After all, he didn't steer me wrong with OxiClean or Orange Glo, so why would Mighty Putty be any different?

My wife's constant violent outbursts often left our home in shambles. Between the broken lamps and cracked coffee mugs, I'm amazed our trailer is still standing.

When I first saw the commercial for Mighty Putty on the TV I was skeptical of its claims that it bonded to everything from glass to concrete. I mean, come on! But with our tub of Elmer's Glue proving to be ineffective, I was willing to try anything.

I placed my order with Amazon, and as promised the package of Mighty Putty arrived in less than a week.

One morning while my wife was passed out I decided to begin the repair work. I started out small - my American Idol coffee mug that my wife had broken the handle off of after I told her we were out of Coffee-Mate.

The Mighty Putty directions are simple: Cut, activate and repair!

When you take the Mighty Putty out of the tube it kind of looks like a long piece of Hubba Bubba (the kind with the watermelon center). I cut the putty fairly easily with a butter knife and began to kneed it in my hands. My sweaty hands made the product very slippery and hard to handle, but I managed.

Using my best ceramics skills I molded the putty into the shape of a coffee mug handle and attached it to the mug. I waited 24-hours for it to dry (just to be safe), then I tested out the mug the following morning.

I lifted the mug by the new Magic Putty handle and it broke right off, sending the mug down onto the table. Coffee spilled everywhere and my wife started breaking things again.

Over the next couple of weeks I successfully used Magic Putty to repair other items around the house, but my coffee mug remains handle-less.

Because of this I can only give Magic Putty an average rating, but if you don't have sweaty hands you might have better luck than I did.

Customer Review: Mighty Putty - smelly but worked for the items I have fixed.
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, don't order it, you can purchase at Target and Bed Bath & Beyond for 9.99. If you must order, go to e-bay and order from a reputable source.

Oh ya, the stuff stinks, but only until it is dry - open a window while using. They only give you one glove - so, I cut off a small amount and put it into a baggie, closed the bag and kneaded until well blended. This worked better than the glove approach, as I have severe arthritis.

I bought this originally to fix a leg on an antique vanity stool that my husband was supposed to weld back together 2 years ago. I was shocked, as the putty began working within minutes. You need to use more putty than you think to secure the pieces together - or whatever you are mending. Once it is dry, sand it to the desired shape/size and paint over to hide.

I used the putty to bond 3 separate places on the U shaped detatched leg --secured each place with painters tape while it dried. Once the putty was completely dry - about 1 hour - the stool withheld my weight -- 124 lbs., and the smell dissappeared as it dried. (So, don't be discouraged by the smell -- all weld bonds stink.)

I then repaired the wooden leg of our t.v. tray stand, a wrought iron clock that had fallen off the wall and come unsoldered. (Guess I should have hung it with a specialty wall hook advertised on t.v. too!)

Now I'm on the hunt for other broken items in the house before the opened tube goes dry!!

The stuff is amazing. I have not tried to hang anything on the wall yet, but am thinking of adhering soapstone tiles to the wall as little shelves in the shower. I have no doubt that it will work well there as well!

I am 100% impressed with the stuff. For me, it worked better than JB Weld!

Customer Review: I was skeptical, however tried it out for $10, instead of calling a plumber! Worked!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Our house was built in 1948, however was remodelled when we moved in. Naturally, a few plumbing problems were expected. Since we lived in our home, we have had a few plumbing issues that we hoped to fix (on our own), since plumbers charge way too much. Thanks to Youtube, we watched a few plumbers fix tub and sink issues, so we ran down to our local Ace Hardware and fixed leaky faucet, replaced valves ourselves. Last summer, under our kitchen sink, a massive hole ripped through our main water pipe, which was a pretty big pipe, 8 inches all around. The pipe had rusted, eaten through. My husband could not remove the pipe to replace it, because the base part, was behind the wall. Since we only have one kitchen sink and our dishwasher hooks up to the same water source, we had to fix this problem right away. I heard about plumber's putty, but then found this product, by chance and decided to go for it, since I didn't want to pay a plumber $1,000 to remove the pipe, and replace it. Anyway, Target (the store) carries this stuff. The hole was so big, I didn't think plumber's putty would work. These come in thick bars. My husband got the pipe super dry with a blow dryer, then he molded each bar to fit. Each bar was also blowdried. You must follow directions, to exact, to get this stuff to work. Anyway, longer story short..... It's been almost a year and this stuff has held up. No leakage at all. Much better to pay $10 on this, then $1,000 on a plumber. I think all the bad reviews are from people wanting to hang stuff with this mighty putty. I am giving it a 5 star, for filling pipe only (plumber purpose only).

Customer Review: Works extreamly well!!

After trying many things for fixing the panel of my car I got Mighty Putty. Not only was it the only thing to fix this panel, it has stayed fixed for going on 2 years! So it didn't just fix what was broken, it stayed fixed. Add to that this panel is on the exterior of the car, so is subjected to weather, washes, heat and sun regularly. The only time this doesn't work is if there is a problem with what someone it trying to fix or they didn't use it right, it's not an issue with Mighty Putty at all.

The down side however is using it. You first cut or rip a section off, which cutting works better to get a proper proportion of each material. Then kneed it by hand to mix the two parts together to activate it. It must be mixed very well or it will not fully activate (just like any 2 part compound). It has quite a smell that doesn't want to wash off very well, so unless you use gloves you'll have stinky hands for a while.

In all, very good product and saved me many hundreds of dollars not having to go to a body shop. I'm very glad I got it, only wish I didn't have to get so many at once. 1 tube would have been more than enough.

Mighty Putty

"Mighty Putty is so strong that it can hold a 14,000 lb. 18 wheeler!" - said Billy Mays. This so called mighty putty can solve all your household problems, from leaky pipes to, to hanging a shelf on the wall. Supposedly you can even lay floor tiles down just be using mighty putty's bonding power. Three reasons why you shouldn't use mighty putty are because it cannot hold that much weight. I tried hanging a shelf with the putty and within 10 minutes, it fell to the floor. Another reason you shouldn't get mighty putty is because it dries up. When trying to patch a leaking pipe, the putty did stick but dried up and fell off the pipe. Finally you shouldn't buy mighty putty because you are wasting your money. As far as fixing leaks, you are a lot better off using plumber's glue or tape. Save yourself the hassle and don't order mighty putty next time you see it on TV!
