I love to cook and I use a huge number of pots and pans every time I entertain. However, I live alone and most of my meals are for two people (I cook dinner for my downstairs neighbor most nights) and I am trying to simplify things so I don't spend as much time cleaning as I do cooking. I use some specialty items like a steamer and a rice-cooker as they help me to concentrate on my main course while some of the sides are doing their thing.
We often have pasta as a side dish or as an entrée. I have two serious pasta pots with strainers that can serve up to ten people. However, when I cook for just two people it is a lot to clean up and to watch over so that they do not overcook or boil-over. I saw the infomercials for this device and was intrigued, but I never order from T-V because of the way that they package things together and include a large shipping charge for each item. I have Amazon Prime so I am always looking for Prime offers and I get just what I want and no more. I decided to give this a try.
The product itself is fairly simple. A plastic container with a straining lid and a steamer insert... that's it! The instructions include cooking times for different types and amounts of pastas. It is a good guideline and should be considered as a starting point. I found that I need to adjust the time for my microwave and for the way that I want my pasta to turn out. It was a short learning curve and I am really enjoying the ease of use that this pot offers.
When I am making a dinner for two or four people and pasta is a part of the meal, I now use the Pasta Boat. There is no compromise on quality, it just makes it easier. If I am making pasta for a larger group I bring out my big pots, but for smaller amounts this is much nicer. I tried the steamer insert and it certainly works, but I stuck it in a drawer and I don't think that I will be using it too often as I have a separate electric food steamer.
The strainer lid is not used when making pasta. It's essentially just a tub holding water and pasta for use in your microwave. When it comes out you snap on the lid and drain the water. Now I am ready to add the pasta to my sauce. I was a little bit anxious about using it with some high-end raviolis but by being cautious I was able to come out with a perfect product. Some people use a regular Tupperware-type container for microwaving pasta, but I find that the handles on the Pasta Boat (as well as the water level markings) makes this a better way to accomplish the task.
If you are cooking pasta for a large family or for entertaining, I would suggest that you stick with the traditional cooking methods and vessels. However, if you own a microwave and cook pasta for 1-4 people, I would recommend that you give this a try. I really like it!
